CHANCE ME: NYU Stern, USC Marshall & MORE

Hello all -
I’ve been on here for a while now and have always wanted to make a post of my own and see what you guys think about my chances. I am a junior who attends a VERY prestigious high school in the Chicago area. I’m interested in studying either business or history, but my first love is definitely business, so I want to make sure I go to a university with a viable business school. Obviously some of these schools may be considered far reaches based on my stats, but if you could please chance me for the following schools/business schools that would be great (chance me for the university FIRST, but if you know anything about admissions at a university’s business school that information would be very helpful too)

  • NYU/Stern (first choice; will likely apply Early Decision)
  • USC/Marshall (second choice)
  • UT Austin/McCombs
  • UNC/Kenan-Flagler
  • Carnegie Mellon/Tepper
  • Georgetown/McDonough
  • Northeastern/D’Amore McKim
  • U Miami
  • Richmond/Robins
  • Indiana/Kelley

Objective:

SAT I: N/A
ACT: 32 (32 Eng/Reading, 33 Science, 30 Math - will try to improve to 33 or 34 in June)
SAT II: TAKING US History, Math I, French
GPA: 3.72 UW/4.08 W (will probably end up around a 4.2 W)
Course rigor show a STRONG upward trend - I started out in all regular level classes, and will be taking all AP’s next year
Rank: School does not rank
AP: US History (?), TAKING NEXT YEAR: Calculus AB, English Lang & Composition, Environmental Science, US Gov, Macroeconomics, World History
Senior Year Course Load: AP Calculus AB, AP English Lang & Composition, AP Environmental Science, AP US Gov, AP Macroeconomics, AP World History (taking all AP’s/hardest schedule possible)
Major Awards: DECA State Qualifier (2nd at regionals in role play, 3rd in econ test), DECA Top 10 in State (written event), French National Honor Society

Subjective:

Minor Awards: Honor Roll (every year in high school), National Honor Society
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Varsity Cross Country, JV Tennis (Captain), Global Citizens Club (President), DECA (VP), Relay For Life (Board Member), School Retreat (Leader - seen as a big honor), School Tutor, 3-year Radio Program Member, Key Club
I am a part of a VERY prestigious two-year research program at my school. There are only 7 kids who applied for it because of the difficulty of being selected.
I am a board member of a local charity event that helps raise thousands annually
Job/Work Experience: Internship this summer in Chicago with a tech start-up
Volunteer/Community service: Volunteering with local food bank, religious organization, and through the community service oriented extracurriculars I am involved in
Summer Activities: Overnight camp counselor
Teacher Recommendation: 9/10 Should be fantastic all the way around. Teachers know what I’ve been through and like me a lot.
Counselor Recommendation: Pretty good 7/10

Other

Applying for Financial Aid?:
Intended Major: Marketing/Finance
State (if domestic applicant): Illinois
School Type: Public (Top 10 in State)
Hooks:

I’m aware that my stats may not be the best for the schools I am targeting, but I want to see where I stand and what my perceived weaknesses might be. If there’s anything you guys think I can improve on before applying let me know! My essays should be the strong suit of my application as I like to think I am a pretty good writer :stuck_out_tongue: If there is anything else I am forgetting I will edit this post later. Thanks!

  • Indiana/Kelley: Low Match

@holahola6 Thanks for chancing me. I think NYU and USC might be my first choices at this point after doing some research. Both seem decent possibilities for me, but obviously this is all a crapshoot. Do you know whether applying early to either USC or NYU helps more in admissions? The admission rates at some schools go way up if someone applies early - I need to look at those two schools to see which one might make more sense to apply early.

You have great ECs, and you scores are really great! (Teach me your ways)
NYU is a definite option…my cousin got in with a 29 and only took two APS. When you apply, be sure to show your uniqueness in your essay. They don’t want to hear how when your cat died. They want to know all of the little quirks that you may not even consider writing about. I went on a tour in March, and an admissions director told us he accepted students who wrote about…
A love of One Direction
A condition that certain people have where they associate colors or words with people
A time someone walked down their driveway to get the mail

As for applying early, the admissions guy said that the admissions rate is almost exactly the same even when applying ED.
