Chance me :) OOS ACT 32 :/

Hello, UNC is seeming more and more like the number one choice for college. I would like to know if i actually have a chance of being admitted, if it is a match, slight reach, or reach. THANKS!!!

THANKS!!!

OH and im first generation from my family to go to college.

And I forgot to add my most important Extra Curricular! I started a private tutoring firm in 2010 and sold it in 2012 for over 2000 bucks.

Summary of my Stats:
6 APs, 96% GPA, 32 ACT: English:34 Math:33 Reading:28 Science: 31

bump…10 char :)

Your academics are pretty strong, but your ECs are so-so. No ‘leadership’ to judge by this list. $2000 is not that much money either.

Certainly worth applying.

Decent chances… Definitely apply.

Thanks. Yeah my EC’s are mediocre. 2000 bucks from a business that i invested around a 200 bucks in sounded like an impressive task to me.

Heck, that’s a lot more than what I got in with! Then again, I was IS. OOS is always a crapshoot, but you’ve got just as good a chance as anyone else. I think 300+ volunteer hours is pretty impressive, as is your small business. And two varsity sports? Your ECs look solid to me. It’ll also help being first gen. Go for it!

Thanks tarheels! I was also planning on applying early action to improve my chances.

In addition, I was wondering if UNC takes into account if a prospective student “shows interest”.

There’s no proof that applying EA significantly improves your chances. Kids who “show interest” are a dime a dozen at UNC. I have friends who have been to every tour, every campus visit, have tons of friends who go to UNC, know faculty members, have pictures of themselves wearing UNC gear as babies that they sent in with their applications…People here bleed Carolina blue. “Interest” isn’t anything new to admissions, because Carolina pride is huge.

Just got back from a tour at UNC. A couple of things. Your ACT meets their range. Showing interest doesn’t help. They want you to have a rigorous course load depending on what your school has to offer. As for grades they want more A’s than B’s. Having 50 different ECs doesn’t help you. They don’t even care if you list the things you do once a month or whatever. They want to see some real interest in one or two things. Also, your tutoring business is a big deal and that should go on your app.
There is no advantage to apply EA. If you need to improve your grades at all you should wait until RD. Hope this helps a little.

Thanks CBGMass. This is very helpful. I have a 96% GPA so I don’t think that I need to necessarily improve that. The only B’s I’ve gotten are in Honors Trig/Pre Calc (90%) and Honors 9th grade English (91%). I have gotten an A in all of the APs I have taken. As of right now, I would have 6 AP classes total throughout high school.

Should I attempt to add another AP class or self study one to strengthen my application?
All in all, what should I do to strengthen my application?

I’m basically in the exact same boat as you! It depends: if 6 AP classes is considered a lot at your school, then you should be fine. If not, taking one more wouldn’t hurt.

shazam is correct. If your school only has a few APs then 6 is fine. If your school offers 20 you need to add another couple. Also, they want to you to have English, math, science, social studies and foreign language your senior year. So if possible you might want to add a science class.

Well, there are 10 APs offered at my school. I have take all of the math and science AP courses offered. I’m already taking AP government and politics so another history class would be almost overkill.

@shazam02, hopefully this “boat” is headed to UNC! haha what other schools are you interested in? It would be nice to know what schools students in our caliber look at? I’m new to this college search thing!

@CBGMass, I think I am enrolled in an english, math, social studies class already. Unfortunately I think that Latin IV will no longer fit into my schedule due to AP Govt.
Should I go ahead and take another language class? (Spanish 1 or French 1) Also I doubled up on my sciences my sophmore year by taking both bio and chem. The only other science class available for me now is chem2. (I don’t want to take chem 2! It’s known as a GPA killer. Very few A’s are given. What should I do? Thanks!

OP: I’m interested in Umich, UCLA, UF, UIUC, Wash U. (all OOS), and a couple others…I’m trying to decide if I should retake the ACT to increase by a point to a 33

14% of OSS applicants were offered admissions this year (expecting a lower yield). While your stats are good they are definitely not good enough to be a lock. I’d be doing anything you could do to improve your competitiveness.

OP - if you can’t fit something into your schedule the Adcom suggested having your guidance counselor write something about that in the GC rec.

Any school that has a low admit rate (including UNC for OOS) is a crapshoot. You have as good a chance as anyone else. Just make sure you cast a wide net and good luck.

@CBGMass I will have to discuss that with my guidance counselor. Also how do they view internship opportunities that are through the school and are substituted instead of electives? I was thinking about shadowing a family friend who’s a dentist.

From the information session it was very obvious that they wanted students who really participated in activities not students who list 50 activities just for the sake of listing them. They are looking for students who made a point to get involved in something they enjoyed and not students who did things to pad their resume. Take the route that fits you best and let it show in your essay. Don’t do anything just to make it look good to the ad coms.

The EC’s of one student can be the exact same as that of another student but the interest describing it in the essay can get one admitted and the other denied.

That is a good point CBGMass. Ill really have to nail the essay portion of the application.
