Would I be able to get admitted if my grades were below average for CU but I am a current member of Mensa and I have a pending patent for an invention?

Thanks a lot!

In general it would’nt help you get into a school like this. It might actually rub admissions people the wrong way that this seemingly brilliant person is a lazy student. I’m not saying you are this, but thats the first impression admissions people will generally get. You also have to understand that within the three schools at Cooper, “giftedness” isnt so uncommon so that it would give you a significant competetive advantage. There are a fair number of people at Cooper who are gifted but they are also strong students and perform well in academic environments.

Furthermore, your not supplying enough information. You say your a C student but what kind of school do you go to? Is it an incredibly difficult school? The reason I ask is because, even among the most elite schools Cooper is considered an immensely rigorous school with an entense courseload. So even though you probably wouldnt struggle conceptually with all the work it’s still a heavy workload that will require a strong work ethic to get through.

So, in general I would say no, your accomplishments arent enough to get you into cooper since they also want hardworking students who are also geniuses. But maybe you might have some special hook that attracts admissions people.

Oh, It just occurred to me, you mentioned that your grades are “below average for Cooper”. I didnt realize that you meant that your grades are average in relation to Cooper, I thought that you meant that your grades reflected the general average - a C. I apologize for this mistake. What specifically are your grades? If your a B student for example, then that changes things quite a bit already. Also, whats your Sat/act? And what school are you applying for? Art/Architecture care more about talent and a certain kind of creative mind. Engineering cares about stats, particularly math/science stats. Worrying about stats wouldnt matter for art/arch for example. But since you are concerned and since you say you have a patent for an invention I’m assuming your applying for engineering, is this correct? If your grades are low for humanities/social science classes but high in science/math and you have a good sat/act score in those categories as well as a lot of Ap classes in math/science you have a more than fair shot.

Thanks for the info. Like you pointed out, when I said “below average for CU” I meant not in the competitive range. That means a 1980 on the SAT (790 on math), 800 on math L2 subject test, and 3.98 gpa out of 5.

… but im generally an A person, I just didnt participate in many AP classes (which were all humanities)

… and also I am indeed applying for the Engineering dept., as this has been my passion for many years!

Did you make it?
