Hi! I just got denied from UCF, legit denied not even deferred, and am freaking out about FSU now. I have an SAT 1780 and ACT 26 (super scored) and my GPA is about a 3.5. I am captain of 2 dance teams, at my high school and for my studio competition team. I am in National Beta Club and am involved in mission trips and multiple dance activities and clubs. I think I wrote a really good essay, something I can't say about my UCF essays, and have toured the school as well as kept in touch with Admissions a few times. Please help!!

Is that a 3.5 unweighted?

In terms of selectivity, UCF is very close to FSU–as far as getting admitted into the university. Individual majors will vary depending on access. Both are a LOT harder to get into then they were even 10 years ago.

Have you tried USF? It’s on about the same level as UCF, in terms of recognition (for what it’s worth) but it seems slightly easier to get into.

Wannabe nolle-

Firstly, I am sorry to hear that your were rejected by UCF and I would like
to offer you a piece of advise.
ASSUMING that you are completely honest regarding your stats,
which included a GPA of 3.5, an SAT of 1780, you are in-state, and
barring any felony arrest, Id strongly advise that you appeal that your denial from UCF and inquiry as to why you were flatly denied.
Many, many applicants just from this board were accepted with much
lower stats. Good Luck !

FSU gives the highest weight in their admission decision to your gpa, followed by your test scores. If, after reviewing both of those, they are still on the fence about your admission, they will look at other factors such as essay, extracurriculars, etc. If 3.5 is your weighted gpa, you may or may not get admitted, as your gpa is in the bottom 25% of admitted students based on the school’s 2011 admission stats.

The other factor that can sway things in your favor is the strength of your schedule, including what courses you are taking in your senior year. If your 3.5 includes multiple AP courses and honors courses, and you have a challenging schedule for your senior year, you still have a decent chance. Also, if you have an increasing grade trend in your upper level classes, that will help too. (needless to say, if the opposite is true that may be a problem)

Don’t give up hope – it is discouraging to get rejected from any school, but that doesn’t mean that the others will reject you too. You may want to apply for a few other schools that are easier to get into, just in case. There are a lot of good Florida schools that are not among the flagships, and many of them have wonderful programs and generous financial aid.
