hey so i'm currently a junior right now and i go to a fairly recognized prep-school (within in the top 20s in the US) in new england. i'm korean and i do not have us citizenship nor a green card.
My GPA is about a 3.78/4.00 (top 15% freshmen year; top 10% sophomore year; top 5% junior year)
As a Junior I take AP American History, AP Calculus BC, AP Chemistry, English, Spanish level 3. (i'm gonna take AP English Language exam this year though) I'm planning to take AP English Literature, AP Biology, AP Physics C, AP Spanish, and Multivariable Calculus next year.
My APs are so far: AP Physics B (5); AP Microeconomics (4); AP Macroeconomics (5)
My SAT I score is 2370. Reading 800; Math 770; Writing 800
I took four SAT IIs already. Math 2C, Physics: 800; Chemistry: 790; and Literature: 780. I'm also planning to take US History and I'm expecting about a 750~770. I also got a 238 on my PSAT (Reading 80; Math 80; Writing 78).
My ECs are: head of school community service club; peer counselor; editor of school newspaper AND school magazine; one of the few math and english tutors; i'm also an admissions and technology prefect. i write for a national newspaper (im an official reporter actually) and am planning to go to Upenn M&TSI (a summer program that offers studies in both management and technology during the summer at Penn). i was school winner for the AMC 10 last year (didnt qualify for the AIME though) but i qualified for the AIME this year (barely made the cut-off in the AMC 12 A...probably won't qualify for USAMO). i also got this 40,000 USD scholarship from this organization at korea and appeared at the newspaper for community service in korea. i'm also planning to do an internship this summer.....(i honestly have no clue)
i really want to do something in criminology when i grow up so hopefuly i'll end up either as a lawyer or somewhere like CSI.
im basically applying to like a million schools (yeah i realize since im korean my chances are so small). most likely to all the ivies + northwestern & u chicago + stanford + amherst, williams, swathmore.....

chance me please?

thanks

okay tip*
when you give a chance thread…try to cut out any unneccesary information and/or rabbles.
with that said, you seem to have a very good chance at the schools you mentioned.
and you’ve already taken 4 SAT IIs…why are you taking more…most schools only want 2-3.

From the average public school, your GPA would hurt, but top prep schools have great placement rates into LACs for those kids just below Ivy caliber. That, combined with your science aptitude, will make Amherst and Williams high matches/low reaches.

it seems like you have a good shot at MIT due to your high math and science workload

id say you’ll have a good chance (high match/low reach) at most of those places accept Stanford. but don’t take it personally no one really has a good chance at stanford.

this is weird. you have another chance me thread for HYPSM and colombia, and you have different SAT scores. is this person a fraud??

The editor of school newspaper/magazine and a club or two is hardly the type of EC’s that are likely to standout with any of the Ivys, Northwestern, UChicago, or Stanford.

Unless you can flush out what exactly “I write for a national newspaper (im an official reporter actually)” means in terms or recognition and time commitments, I do not think your ECs account for anywhere near a convincing case of constructive use of time for HS. IMO your chances at any of these schools are not terrific.

So are you applying as an international applicant? If so, it will make your chances significantly lower than if you applied domestically.

Other than that, your math and writing ECs are very impressive and will give you as good a chance as anyone at those schools. I say you’ll get into around half or more of them.

Honestly, I wouldn’t expect to be accepted into Columbia and Stanford. You’re a strong applicant and you have phenomenal scores/ECs, but the fact that you’re Asian and you’re pretty much applying as an international student is going to kill you. The chances at Stanford for anyone is practically slim to none. But if you applied for financial aid into Columbia, it will downright destroy your chances.

I’d say you’re definitely in at Northwestern though, they don’t seem to be big on the whole “Our school needs to be diverse” thing. They have like a 70% white population and a 25% Asian population.

^NU has < 20% asian population and about 55% caucasion and NU is just as “big on the whole ‘Our school needs to be diverse’ thing” as all of the other Top 12 schools in the country. And based on the OP’s underwhelming EC’s I would certainly not say he is definitely in at Northwestern.

[1998 Ethnic Classification Summary: Office of the Registrar - Northwestern University](http://www.registrar.northwestern.edu/academic_records/enroll-grad_statistics/1998_ethnic_classification_summary.html)

The point is, they in fact aren’t just as big about diversity as other colleges.

And my brother’s friend (an international Korean - had no permanent residency) was accepted with a 2180 SAT I. So yeah, I’m pretty sure OP’s fine.

^You are clearly wrong about your stats and about the diversity focus of the university and a simple search would have enlightened you.

… because you “know somebody” who was accepted with a 2180 you think the adcoms at NU are driven by SAT scores, I think you are completely mistaken there as well.

Wow, way to totally twist my words around.

1] Yup, the stats taken directly from the NU website is all incorrect.

2] I never said they don’t like diversity, my point was that it’s not as emphasized as other top-tier universities.

3] I never said adcoms are driven by SAT scores. I was making the point that higher scores simply means a higher acceptance chance.

1) I did not twist your words around in any way. I was referring to the stats you posted concerning 25% asian polulation and 70% white at NU. These clearly were not taking directly from the NU website as they are cleary erroneous.

I will not address your other points but to simply say that I still completely disagree with your premise that diversity is not emphasized as highly at NU as it is at other top-tier universities. And I also believe that your assessment of the OP’s chances of admission as “definitely in” is not accurate in my opinion. Not to say he doesnt have a reasonable chance of a positive admission outcome, but with his underwhelming EC’s he is certainly not a sure thing.

“i write for a national newspaper (im an official reporter actually)”

Totally underwhelming.

^Why didn’t the OP say what newspaper? What section/column they write?

By the way, the link you had was from ** 1998 **

If anything, the Asian population went up.
