Hello,
I'm a female Chinese freshman applying for Exeter and Choate. I would like to know my chances of getting into these schools, because honestly, (although everyone has a chance,) I lack EC's.

I just received my 'report card' and got 6 E's and 2 S's. (excellent and satisfactory- no number grades yet, sorry) I attend Stuyvesant High School in NY so I guess it can be called competitive.
8th grade report card (last marking period):
100 English
98 Writing
99 Social Studies
100 Regents Math
98 Science
100 Spanish (have taken 3 years)
100 Art (My painting was selected for the yearbook cover)
98 Sports Medicine
95 Phys. Ed
99 Health
Weighted average of the whole year: 98.93
I was on the Principal's list for three years.
My grades are OK, but I don't play any sports.
Musically, I only play the flute (3 years.)

In 8th grade, I participated in a medical program (Junior Fellows) where I did a year long research program on the effects of vitamin D on multiple sclerosis and presented my project at the Maimonides Hospital. I also submitted my abstract to the New York Academy of Medicine. I plan on continuing this and becoming a Scholar in program. I'm extremely passionate about medicine and I memorize bones for fun. (Not that that matter much.)

I tutor kids at a prep center after school and volunteer at my school library. (50+ hours?) I'm on my school's math team and plan on participating in more competitions in the future. I won a "Progress Through Justice Award" from the district attorney, "Junior High School Leadership Award" from the mayor, "Melvin Feil Award" for outstanding character, honorable mention in a state drawing contest...

I think I can get pretty good recommendations from my current teachers and a extra recommendation from the dean of my previous school. He was the one who told me to apply for Choate and Exeter in 8th grade, but I could not convince my mom back then. Over the summer, I changed her mind.

I think I can score above 85 percentile because my friend took the test last year and said it was easier than the SHSAT, which I excelled on, but I really shouldn't base my judgment of the test on that. >.<

I seriously lack the 'hooks' that people have around here and will be applying for financial aid. What are my chances? (Sorry this was so long..)

academically ur solid but so are most asian applicants such as urself
do u have any sports that u can play at a competitve level? any other stuff besides acamdemics?

No, I am not on any teams at my school. Although personally, I excel in track and field, I never joined the team. Thank you for the reply, and I do realize that a lot of asian applicants have grades equal or better than mine. I’m trying to find something in myself that is unique, but I’m having a hard time expressing it to the schools I’m applying to. I greatly appreciate your response (first one!~)

Stuyvesant is an excellent, competitive school, it would help if you’re doing well there. I’m curious as to why you would say your grades are 98-100 but they are “okay” or that you “only play the flute.” Yes, apparently Asian applicants are not lacking (in grades or otherwise.) But after the bazillionth over- qualified Asian applicant, what more can one do? IMHO, just be confident in what you’ve already achieved. Applications ask how long you have participated in an activity. If you suddenly have 3 sports that you’ve participated in for one month, it wouldn’t look as good as one sport which you’ve played for many years.

Compared to the other applicants here, I feel like I’m lacking… I say that my grades are okay because the courses themselves aren’t advanced. I agree with you about sports and I realize that I can’t do much about it. Thanks, you helped me a lot.

Another question: How much does you SSAT percentile affect your chance of acceptance?

First off you’re an idiot if u think a 98 average is ok. Second, no offense but most of the asian applicants are gonna have really good grades and generally good SSAT scores. You really do lack EC’s and those are weighted a lot in the application process. Generally, grades only matter if they are as good as yours then that will help you out a little, or if you have a lot of B’s or lower that might hurt you. But they’re really looking for how much you can contribute to their community and how they think you’ll fit in. Have you had your interview yet?

Thank you for the reply. No, I was not interviewed yet, I will be one December 21st. I am taking the ssat tomorrow. I’m really worried about the interview, I know I am supposed to just be myself, but I’ve never been interviewed before.
