I go to a very competitive public school in Kansas (sooooooo many kids going to Ivies this year :[ ). I was hoping this might help my GPA situation - hardly anyone ever gets an A in AP/IB classes, maybe 1 per class. Mostly B's or C's. So because I've taken 10 AP's/IB's a lot of my grades have been B's. UW class rank is probably effed up to, as I've taken a lot more AP/IB's than most of my peers.

I would think that UM and Miami would be harder to get into than Tulane?

Also, bump.

Do well on the AP/IB exams. Schools will be able to tell as to the comparative rigor of your AP/IB courses as with others.

^^
Won’t do much help during the admissions process though…

Tulane has gotten a little more selective recently.

Miami has never been harder to get into than Tulane. The typical Tulane student has higher test scores and the freshman class at Tulane is a fair amount smaller, combined with Tulane having way more applications.

Do we get a BFF ring >:| ??!?

Tulane is a reach but I give you a punchers chance. UVM is not a horrible party school, and you can get in. Burlington is beautiful. You will have a strong return. Chance back?

Good to know fallenchemist, I must have been misinformed. That actually really surprises me, because last year at my school I knew a pair of uber-smart twins (2150+ SATs/head of NHS, varsity sports like every year, all AP’s, etc) who went to UMiami and UMaryland respectively, whereas this other slacker kid with like no AP’s, no EC’s, lowish grades (prob a lil lower than mine), ended up at Tulane. The twins must’ve gotten full-rides or something…and maybe the slacker had super high SAT’s. Interesting nonetheless.

RobinsonI - No input - no BFF ring :P

willketchup I’ll chance ya back

marist - Tulane and Miami are both really good with merit scholarships, so you could well be right. As far as your “slacker” friend, it is true that at Tulane excellent SAT scores can make up for some relatively minor deficiencies in someone’s record otherwise, although usually not having a challenging course record is a fairly big negative. Hard to know sometimes what is in someone’s record that is compelling to a school.

Yeah I guess that makes sense. Now that I think about it, I think the twins needed a full-ride anyways so I guess once they were offered it, they made up their minds. Slacker kid must have gotten lucky I guess - I heard Tulane’s admissions have been pretty twisted and unpredictable recently anyways.

That really sucks though, cuz Tulane is like my #1 or #2. Oh well.

It looks to me like Tulane might be getting back to a more “normal” admissions phase. In any case, I like your chances, especially if they get the impression you really want to go there. You have a pretty strong record.
