Since you’re an international student from CHINA (there are lots of kids from there who don’t need aid so the diversity factor doesn’t work for you. although i must say, your achievements are very impressive) needing aid:

Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Dartmouth, Stanford, Caltech, Columbia, Uchicago, Upenn, Brown, WUSTL = All of them are extreme reaches, with Yale the most possible due to its recently-discovered proclivity for accepting STEM kids. WUSTL (due to its small budget for international aid) and Caltech (same reason) are probably not going to happen at all.

Williams, Amherst, Swarthmore, Middlebury, Pomona, Carleton, Davidson, Vassar, Hamilton, Washington & Lee, Colby, Kenyon, Trinity, Lafayette = All of them are reaches. Sorry to tell you that. Their aid budget is still very limited and they get loads of Chinese applicants with similar profiles who don’t need aid so all of them are going to be long shots. Williams, Amherst, Swarthmore, Middlebury, Pomona and Carleton are especially high reaches. Carleton probably the highest reach due to the very, very small number of international students it can afford to accept with aid. From the other bunch, Kenyon is the least likely due to its very small budget for international aid.

Would my “chancing” surprise some people? It definitely would. But often people do not realize that the situation for international students is very different and it is not useful to chance them on the basis of American perspectives. If you didn’t need aid, those American perspectives would be just fine. Take heed people, don’t give international students needing aid “chances” without understanding the situation.

PS You can’t apply to 26 schools. The CommonApp limit is set at 20.

Thx. International95. I’m thinking of applying to only SOME of the schools in the list. Do you have any recommendations?
If I don’t apply for FA at some schools(e.g.Uchicago, Columbia, Stanford, Caltech, WUSTL), what will my chances be?

Bbff1234, don’t be so disheartened by international95. Although most American universities are need-aware, Harvard, Princeton, Yale and MIT are NEED-BLIND for ALL applicants. So apply early-action/decision to one of these schools.and I’m sorry, but Stanford, Caltech, and Columbia as ridiculously hard for needy international students, so they most likely won’t happen at all.

Oh my goodness. Harvard, Princeton, Yale and MIT by the virtue of their competitiveness are probably not going to happen. If one is good enough to get into one of those need-blind schools, then one is probably very competitive for admission at Stanford/Columbia. They have aid, just not enough to accept every international they like but of course the best applicants will be admitted and funded.

THX, everyone. Just curious about my chances. Do please feel free to air your views, though ; any more advice?
