****** THIS SUMMER: There are a lot of things I can do, I will continue working, but I also have the choice of an Internship at a Pharmaceutical company, or taking more advanced classes at University. I also will be finalizing a history paper I wrote that I will be sending to the Concord Review (very soon), so hopefully that will be published.

All in all, I am not the person to freak out because I am pretty sure I will be accepted to some of the colleges I apply too. But I also know that with the higher-up universities my application will look extremely common. So that's why i was wondering if i could get some advice on what I could do this summer to help improve my chances at these schools, and also to just let me know what my chances are as they stand :) So thanks a lot for any advice I really appreciate it.

Colleges I am looking at:
Johns Hopkins
University of Chicago
Northwestern
Washington University in St. Louis
UC Berkeley
UCLA
Duke
UMich
(in no particular order)
Then any of the Ivys and Stanford/MIT I will probably apply to for kicks :p

I think you should be in at all of them and probably a non HYP ivy. However, you have a shot at HYP and should apply.

Thanks a lot I’ll definitely shoot you a chance back.

Bump10char

Pretty good chances at all of them. Good job!

Decent chances at all of them, because they like numbers. But that also depends on if they like weighted numbers or UW numbers.

Born 2 dance, what do you mean they like numbers? and that GPA listed above was my unweighted 3.95, all IB classes are on a 5.0 scale at my school, and I think they weight the honors courses I took freshman and sophomore year too but I am not 100% sure.

By liking numbers, I mean they focus a bit more on grades and test scores, etc than on ECs.

So my EC’s are sort of meh? I don’t really have much that distinguishes me lol  but I am hoping that either 200/300 level classes at University or an Internship will sort of make me stand out. Any advice on which I should do?

All of the colleges on your list should only be slight reaches. Your grades are ok (upward trend is nice), but maybe you should consider retaking either SAT or ACT to have a better shot at the tougher schools you plan on applying to. You’re ECs are actually pretty good. You have some leadership and you’re active outside of school which is nice and should help you. I think the internship would be a better experience for you b/c you get the work experience and potentially have something to talk about in your essay.

Yea I think you have a pretty good chance of getting into most of these schools, at least UoC, Mich,& NW. Idk about Duke & Hopkins. Those two get thousands of apps yearly & all are competitive. But you’re ECs are great & you seem like a leader, so you have a fairly good chance of acceptance. What’s your major though? If you have a competitive major like premed or polisci, you might have a harder chance. But if it’s something unpopular, like philosophy, you’ll probably get in easy. (if your gonna be some kind of science major, take subject tests. they look more competitive, unless they’re required for admission anyway.)

Alrite thanks a lot for the advice! Unfortunately, as you can probably infer from my schedule I am a science geek. So I plan on going to med school with pre-med in college. As for my major I have no idea. I would probably apply to BME at Johns Hopkins because it is such a great program. But other than that anything science related I am interested in. I still need to pick  Any suggestions?

I am very interested in Psychology/Neurology.

Have you looked into any 6 year med programs? I don’t know if they still have it, but there was one between Union College and Albany Medical School that was good, especially for Neurology.

I have briefly, and one of my friends was very very close to going to one, but the impression I got from the program/s were that they are very locked in and don’t allow for many electives to be taken? I love science and don’t have a problem with a faster-paced program but I feel like I will lose some of the freedom and just overall experience that a four-year university can provide, and I am not sure if those are things I am willing to give up. But I will definitely take a closer look.

Also, isn’t the Union/Albany program eight years?

Some are more locked in than others, but in programs like the penn state one with jeff (6yr program), a few kids I talked to were taking a bunch of electives because AP credit helped them finished the core requirements early. If you have enough credit, you can get as much “freedom” as you want within the programs.

Cool I think that depending on how well I do on my HL tests I will have a lot of credit for college too so I would definitely look in to it. Anyone else want to chance me please? Bump :)

As far as I know, it’s 6 years. Or at least it used to be. But it may have changed in the years since my mother attended it. lol

Union/Albany is def. an 8yr program. RPI/Albany is 7 but Sienna/Albany is 8.
