Chance me please- University of Washington, Seattle and others

American citizen studying in Bangladesh. I have given my O and A levels under the British EDEXCEL system and the SAT 4 times .-.
Yup, 4 times. And still not over 2000. But anyway, I’ve been interested in UW Seattle as well as some of the UC’s and Purdue for quite a while and am hoping to get admitted into the institution to study Computer Science. My Stats:

O Levels:
Maths, Pure Mathematics and English Language- A*
Physics and Accounting- A
Bengali- B
ICT- C

estimated gpa-3.57

A Levels:
Maths and Pure Mathematics- A
Physics- C

estimated gpa-3.33

Please note: Under my system, we are not given GPA’s. I’m just assuming thats what it is based on the normal grading system.

SAT: 1650, 1760, 1850, 1870
1870- Maths 700, Reading 530, Writing 640(Essay 8)
super score of 1920- Maths 700, Reading 580, Writing 640(Essay 8)

I know. I’m embarrassed about doing poorly so many times, especially given the fact that English is my first language and am more than proficient in the language.

EC’s:
Music- Drummer in a band 3.5 years, Vocalist in a band 1 year.
Sports- Played football in and out of school, golf and tennis in a local club. All for 4+ years. No school football team. Received a runner up award for a tournament in tennis. But I mostly played these sports for fun and will continue to do so.

I’m confident in my entire application except for my SAT. I know UW Seattle is more focused on the essays and school records rather than the SAT, but obviously given my circumstances I should be worried. I wrote both the required essays for UW and had them checked by some people. I was told one was good and the other was quite great. I usually don’t think much of my essays and don’t want to sound obnoxious and what not, but I enjoyed the latter essay and thought it was great.

Though UDub Seattle is my main choice, I have applied to others. Such as: UCLA, UCB, UCSB, UCSD, UCI, Purdue, Georgia Tech(reach I know), UMass Amherst(really dont wanna go here though. I hear the campus is ugly .-.) and UBC in Vancouver(ultimate backup). Second choice would be UCSB or Purdue. Purdue is amazing as well.

I’ve already applied for the computer science major at UW Seattle and the rest for Autumn 2015 and am hoping to receive some acceptance letters, mainly UDub

Basically I made some threads because one of my friends said I wouldn’t get in anywhere and that really started freaking me out. I was wondering if anyone could chance me to give me something to go on and if I should really be worried or not. I put a thread on the UDub discussion already and someone said I should get in for regular decision, but I was hoping to get some more opinions. Anyway, if any other info is needed, let me know. I’ll be glad to send anything, including the essays, in a private message.

Thank you.

@‌Yvask96 -

UCLA (US #20) & UCB (US #23) - It should go without saying that these schools are very selective and I would put both as a high reach.

UCSD (US #37) & UCSB (US #40) - Also very selective, but these are second tier schools compared to the two above so I would say you have a slim shot at them. (Well second tier by UC standards lol)

UDub (US #48) - This is simply a reach, not a high reach like the schools above. Great school BTW some of my cousins went here.

Purdue (US #62) -Now we’re in the realistic range, Purdue is a solid school and as a public university it is somewhat affordable. Your SAT is somewhat higher than the average student (which is 1200 M+R) and your GPA is likely comparable to the average student assuming they see the A levels as weighted.

UMass Amherst (US #76) - Although lower ranked than Purdue it has a higher average SAT at (1220 M+R) and an average WGPA of 3.78. This years stats could be higher so I would guess you have an ‘ok’ shot at UMass, but they love GPA so you may not be so lucky. Actually you may have a better shot at Purdue than UMass because of this obsession with GPA that they have. lol (But you didn’t seem to like UMass to much so I guess that’s ‘ok’)

Also, The Campus isn’t THAT bad: http://■■■■■■■.com/qddmaao / http://■■■■■■■.com/pszc2xy / http://■■■■■■■.com/ocves72

UBC - This is a Canadian University so I wouldn’t know since they use a separate grading system and standardized tests. This being said, it looks like a safety to me given the high acceptance rate.

Lastly, I didn’t want to burst your bubble on those top schools, I do think you have a good shot at those last three. Be sure to like their FB pages so they know your interested. (This may sound stupid, but trust me they are looking)

PS- CS is selective at most of these schools so don’t worry if they accept you undecided, you can switch in later in most cases. Good Luck!

Cool thanks. A couple of questions.

Is UDub a realistic reach? I really badly wanna go here, so this is the one I’m more interested in .-.

Last three as in UBC, UMass and Purdue, or UMass, Purdue and UDub?

If my A levels are seen as weighted, aren’t my results quite good in the eyes of all the Uni’s, except for UCB, where its below average. If its taken as weighted, I’d be so happy

Isn’t my GPA and SAT well below average for UCLA? I know it is for UCB and is around average for UCSD and UCSB. This would be a clear sign of a high chance of being rejected…

I’m still not sure about UMass Amherst cause only the students say its not that bad looking. And environment is a key factor when attending a Uni.

Thanks for the help
And still open to more!!!

@Yvask95‌ - I would love to tell you that you will get into UDub but that’s not how things work. lol This being said, you still have a chance at UDub. At UDub your SAT’s are on par with the average student, however, I can’t say much on how they will view your GPA. (This will vary by admission team)… As far as the second tier UC’s are concerned your SAT is comparable, at UCSD & UCSB, but your GPA will likely fall below the average. The big problem is that these schools are very selective even if you are near their stats. As far as UCLA and UCB go I don’t see a good chance of getting in. Lastly, UMass and Purdue will be your best shots. I would keep an eye out on these as they are both very solid schools. Also, as to why you have heard these mixed things about UMass, I would say that this is likely because a lot of this criticism is coming from Mass which is host to MIT, Harvard, Tufts, BC, Amherst College, Williams… the list goes on. Ultimately, UMass is seen as a safety for the elite Students of MA, so it is looked down upon even though it is better than many public state flagships and improving quickly. (It is however very well known in CS, so I would say you would have a great change at a job in MA)

PS - I would try and get in contact with these school’s admissions departments if you have any specific questions about these schools. Please take your time with all this and understand that wherever you go as long as you work hard, and you don’t hate the place, you should do quite well.

Yeah I’m thinking UDub is not a sure thing but it’s also not a lost cause. I’ve seen a lot of people get in with similar results as mine but only for regular admission not direct. But yeah, I wont get my hopes too high

I knew that UCLA and UCB were reaches. They are practically reaches for everyone except perfect score people. I applied knowing they were reaches anyway.

UCSB and UCSD are kinda low reaches aren’t they? I know I’m on average with SAT results, but idk how Uni’s look at O and A level examinations. I know I get tons of credit though for my A levels.

I would love to go to Purdue. Amazing academics, great campus, great dorms and from what I hear, its a nice city.

I wanna do some more research on UMass if I do get admitted there. Its all people say about the Uni. Great Uni, but you will probably hate the campus. I cant say from first hand experience, but I might actually end up liking it.

What do you guys think about UCI?

Thanks

UWA: High match
Berkeley: Reach
UCLA: Reach
UCSD: Reach
UCSB: Reach
UMass Amherst: Low match
Purdue: High match
GA Tech: Reach
UBC: Safety

Ya, hopefully we can get some other people to get input. I took the time to get all the stats together!
Again, a simple breakdown of stats in order of selectivity:

UCB - High R (1375 SAT, 4.18, 17% accept)
UCLA - High R (1320 SAT, 4.17 WGPA, 18% accept)
UCSD - R to low R (1290 SAT, 4.13 WGPA, 33% accept)
UCSB - R to low R (1250 SAT, 4.03 WGPA, 36% accept)
UWA(UDub) - High Match (1230 SAT, 3.79 WGPA, 55% accept)
UMass Amherst - Match (1220 SAT, 3.78 WGPA, 61% accept)
Purdue - Match (1200 SAT, 3.75 WGPA, 60% accept)
UBC- Safety (Uses the Canadian system so…)

PS- You may have a better shot at UDub than I thought! But again CS admissions are tough. Also, I was surprised at some of these stats to be honest… especially surprising is how similar the schools outside of California are with stats.

Again, Good Luck!

Halcyon77 has offered excellent advice and a wealth of information.

A couple of points for Yvask to consider regarding UDub:

The mean GPA for the 2014 freshman class was 3.76 unweighted (per Common Data Set). The 25/75 ACT was 25/31. For comparison, UCLA GPA was 3.85 unweighted, with ACT of 26/32.

Last year, UDub’s admission rate was 39.8% for international non-residents. This year, applications are up 16% overall and up 19% from nonresidents, which will probably increase the selectivity.

Also, the UDub Common Data Set states that GPA is “very important,” whereas standardized test scores are “important” in admission decisions.

Awesome!! You guys have been epic. @UWfromCA they’re regarding me as a freshman, not an international applicant
I know my GPA is low, but I’m also not sure if that’s my proper GPA.

UDubs average GPA was 3.79/5? o.O
Thats surprisingly low.

I’m not really that hopeful for UCLA and UCB anyway. My mom wanted me to apply there cause my sister goes to the Academy of Art in San Francisco. So we’d be pretty close. And UCSB, I would love to go there, as well as UCSD.

Again thanks guys!

Open to more if you have an opinion!

That admission rate I mentioned was for freshmen international applicants. The GPA is 3.76/4.

Okay thanks.

Denied to UCSD, but accepted to UMass Amherst with a Chancellors Award of 8000 USD per year
I still prefer UW Seattle though .-.

Rejected from UW Seattle…
