UW Seattle chance me please? Good academics, weak EC's

Hi everyone, I have wanted to get into the Udub Seattle my entire life, and recently I really have had a pang in my confidence level hearing about many people being rejected despite their 4.0 gpa’s and such. I’m very nervous about my chances. I would really appreciate it if some nice people could chance me!

Currently in senior year.
Asian-American

Grades:

-Freshmen year: Straight A’s, one A-
-Sophomore: Straight A’s (plus an online class), one A-
Junior: Straight A’s (plus a before-school class), one A-

SAT: 1300 (but if given more time, I’m hoping to raise it. This is the average for the scores this year, would this still be okay further on?)

EC’s:

  • NHS 3 (counting this year) years
  • volunteer work at 2 city/county organizations (not very often though, probably about a few times a year for each organization, and it’s very easy factory work)
-Volunteer at a zoo for a summer
-Volunteer at a library tutoring for a year and a half (counting this year)
-softball during freshmen year (should I include this in my apps? It caused me a lot of blows to my confidence and I became a better person, but I decided sports weren’t for me and I didn’t do it the following year)

Passion: The environment, music, studying, and helping other people

Essays: Writing is my weak point, but I’m willing to work really hard to write the best essays I can.

Sorry for the long list of EC’s - I feel like they were all weak so I decided to list them all! :-S

In terms of academics, this is as good as it gets, it’s UW, while probably one of the best schools it still got a 50% admission rate. You should be fine

Thanks for the reply! I feel more relieved. My academics may slip slightly this year since I know that senior year is harder though.

I am still unsure about my EC’s - I know that UW put a lot of emphasis on a “wholistic” review of students.

If possible, I would like to hear some more opinions please

Hi! If you are in-state, good grades might push you in, but of course, your EC’s don’t have a super huge impact on your app (as opposed to your phenomenal GPA) so you’re best bet is emphasizing your good grades! Don’t look down on your own volunteer work and just pound those essays out as best as you can, as MANY have said that the essay probably made or broke them. Make yourself interesting, market your skills, and the rest shouldn’t be up to too much chance if you really put your all into it. Good luck! I’m applying this year, but I have the advice from several recently accepted/several alumni to support my case.

I am in fact in state! Thank you a ton for your comment, it really helped me! I have a question: would you think of UW as a reach school for me?

I will definitely do more volunteer work and completely destroy (hopefully in a good way) those essays

Hi! I got into UW this year with 4.0, 9 APs, 1390 sat, and not very many ECs other than lots of orchestra-related stuff, and key club. I had friends, however with lower stats and better ECs. I think you have a great chance considering your awesome academics and I personally think your ECs look awesome, especially compared to mine. I think it’s important to have something you’re passionate about to write about, even if the quality of the writing isn’t superior. The best advice I got was to keep the essays interesting and try to make an impression… because imagine being the person reading hundreds of personal statements… they will be more likely to remember one that’s a little different/unique (rather than just another one about overcoming a difficulty like a sports injury which apparently is very common and they tend to get bored of haha). If you’re in state that helps as well, so I think you’ll be fine  Good luck!!

*friends with lower stats and better ECs that got in.
