Chance Me Please- UVA, W&M, U of Maryland...

I know I'm not as impressive as a lot of you kids in here. I gotta hand it to most of you.

I'm in a pretty competitive high school in suburban Northern Virginia.

GPA: 3.82 Weighted (55/389) :-X
SAT: 1990 (680 writing, 670 Math, 640 Reading- I know, I know...I retook it in Oct, waiting for better scores...unfortunately, I have yet to take SAT IIs...going to do Math II and Latin.)

Our grading scale is pretty tough, no weights for honors classes. AP is out of 5.0 scale. 98-100 is A+, 94-97 is A, 90-93 is B+, 86-89 is B, 82-85 is C+...etc. I think the scale is relatively tough compared to my friends' schools.

Work Experience:

In terms of work experience, I am a self-employed online entrepreneur. I typically purchase and resell/invest in products on the internet for up to/over $1500 profit each week, my best being a 1600% return. It gives me a variety of skills, including and not limited to time management, customer service, consumer relations, photography, web development, promotion, selling, and insight into the business and entrepreneurial world. I have also begun to sell products for other people, as a consignment service.

(How can I incorporate that into my application?)

Colleges Applying To/Considering (in rank of choice)

University of Virginia (doing Early Decision)
William and Mary
University of Maryland-College Park
University of Michigan
University of Delaware
Drexel
Fordham (well, the application fee was free for me!)

I am also a year ahead, because I skipped a grade. (how can I incorporate THAT into the application?)

The truth hurts, but I'll be ready for it. Thanks in advance. Anyone wanna recommend good safety schools? Thanks.

Your SATs are fine for UVA, especially in state. Their middle half is 1280-1490, and it's always easier in state. I can't really say if you'll get in though. I would guess that you'll get in regular decision, especially if your SATs go up, just judging by the people I know who have gone to UVA from in state. I don't know about the other schools though. But colleges will see you're a year ahead because you'll put down your birthdate. I know some VA safety schools- JMU & Mary Washington- but those might be too easy for you. ... well, that's my advice... I'm not an expert though.

What's your class rank/percentage?

What did you get on the AP tests?

Depending on those, UVA (and perhaps UMCP) may or may not be a slight reach. Your SAT score, as is, is really dragging you down, so get that fixed if possible. The online commerce thing is an impressive hook, but exactly how much of one depends on your interest.

Impressive, though, and you're a shoo-in for most of the others (don't know about some of them).

I'm a Sophomore at William and Mary and no expert. However I think you have a good shot at both UVA and William and Mary. I think your chances at UVA are better. Why? NOT BECAUSE I THINK ONE IS EASIER TO GET INTO THAN THE OTHER! I think because you have attended a program already at UVA; this demonstrates interest. I do think you need to "court" one school over the other. If UVA is your first choice let them know either by phone calls to admissions or in your essay. Your personal statement should also include your internet business info and the fact that you did skip a grade. This makes you stand out and in my opinion should be conveyed. Yes, the admissions officers look closely at all apps but I'm wondering with the slew they receive if they will look at your birthdate. On a final note, you are sort of a "text book candidate" for both schools. This makes it difficult for you because although your STATS are very good, they are about average or below (can ya believe it?) average for UVA and William and Mary. What high school you come from, the area of Virginia, how many students apply, are accetped and typically choose to attend.................all of this WILL matter. Your class ranking will be very important. You have done great and will be accepted to a very good college. Good Luck!

Thanks guys.

Does anyone else have any suggestions/assessments?

Also, does the fact my sister is in UVA right now have any bearing on my acceptance?

Yes, the fact that your sister is a UVA student WILL help. Make sure you point this out.

If you get into Maryland College Park's Honors Program and recieve a nice financial package ;) ;) you ought to come here. If you get Gemstones thats even better. Actually if you get into Gemstone, your desicion has already been made for you. Maryland's H.P. is the best in the country.
