Are you in state or out of state? It can make a pretty big difference…

As an out-of-state applicant you’re in a very selective pool (our entire pool is highly selective but the competitiveness is heightened out of state because W&M is public).

We would recommend you consider beefing up your schedule a bit next year. If you go to a very competitive high school then we’re guessing they offer a multitude of AP classes. In those cases, most of our applicants take a total (over all years) of 5-6. As it stands, you currently have four. We’d recommend AP Calc over AP Stats and maybe an AP foreign language if those are doable for you.

We’d also emphasize the important of your first semester grades. 80% of our students graduate in the top 10% of their class. We do take the competitiveness of your school into consideration when evaluting grades and rank but when you’re competing against 13,000 other students, every little bit helps.

Any reason your Critical Reading score is so different from your others? W&M focuses primarily on the Critical Reading + Math and our middle 50% range OOS is 1380-1450. Your current score of 1280 is a bit below that. Since we superscore your SAT we’d definitely recommend taking it again.

Finally, we’d encourage you to pursue a leadership position this year (maybe captain of your tennis team for example). Distinguishing yourself in your personal qualities (ECs, essay, recs) can always make your application stand out more.
