hello everyone! I have currently completed IGETC, 48 units, and have a 3.90 GPA. My major is biochemistry. This september I plan on tagging UCR . I also plan on applying to all UC schools except Berkeley and Davis. I will even apply to Merced. The problem I am facing is that I will have completed only the bare minimum of prereqs by fall 2012. I will have completed two semesters of gen chem, the physics series, calc one and two, and two bio classes. I will not be able to complete ochem and the two other bio classes in the series. I don't want to only take two classes a semester if I stay at my cc until fall 2013. Do you think I have a chance to get in to UCR? UCI? Should I even apply to UCLA? Also, what about USC? Where are their major prereqs listed?

Thanks for your help in advance :)

I would highly recommend trying to finish the o-chem series. You should do at least one semester of O-Chem at least if you want to go to UCLA. I’ve seen A LOT of competitive people get rejected by UCLA because they were missing a semester of O-Chem. Supposedly that’s like an unwritten rule.

Thanks Jonny, do other UC schools have the same unwritten rule? I would honestly sacrifice going to UCLA if that meant staying at my cc another year. At the end of this academic year I will have completed 84 semester units. I do not want to go past 90 semester units. So, do i have a chance at other UC schools (R/I/merced/SD/SB)?

FYI there is a chance thread.

Which CC do you go to and which Bio courses have you taken there? I can give you more feedback once I know this.

I know. I am sorry it is just that barely anyone actually gets chanced on that thread.

I go to Chaffey College I am currently taking Core Biology(intro to cell and molecular bio). In the Spring i plan on taking Evolutionary Ecology.

I just want to guarantee my acceptance at a school. Which explains why I am tagging UCR.

You have a better chance of being elected Pope

why do you say that shannon?

*" The problem I am facing is that I will have completed only the bare minimum of prereqs by fall 2012 " *

… nuff said ??

lmxao omg, a new critical contender to CC. lmxao omg.

But I will have completed the minimum amount of prereq’s, completed all of IGETC, have a 3.90 gpa, and i have an excellent personal statement. In addition, doesn’t UCR accept 80% of all transfer applicants? I am tagging UCR as well, that can only increase my chances. I do not see how my chances of getting accepted to UCR, or any other university in the world for that matter, is equivalent to one in 7,000,000,000.

" In addition, doesn’t UCR accept 80% of all transfer applicants? "

If yer so sure yer a shoe-in , why are bothering to ask us about all this ??

I appreciate your criticism ShannonEntopy and i would like to retract my original post asking to be chanced for UCR and instead would like to be chanced for UCSD. If you would be so kind in assisting me.

So you’ll be taking Bio 63 in the Spring? Many people transfer without taking the Genetics, Biochem, & Molecular Bio courses that are transferable to UCI and UCLA since they aren’t offered at many CCs so don’t worry so much about those.

Why on earth are you TAG-ing UCR? You’ll get in there without TAG so you shouldn’t waste your application on it. I’m not sure if you were serious about this or not, but I hope you’re not wasting my time.

If you maintain your GPA, I’m sure you’ll get into a variety of the UCs but there’s definitely a chance they might look down on you taking Physics rather than Ochem especially since you are a Biochem major and some of your Upper Division classes will have Ochem as a pre-req. Overall, UCLA requires even regular Bio applicants to have completed one semester of Ochem before transfer, so it’s possible that it is reflected in Biochem as well.

As for UCSD, you have to decide if you want to apply for Biochem in the Biology department which is usually impacted but has less pre-reqs or in the Chemistry department which isn’t impacted but has more pre-reqs and a different focus in Upper Division.

Right now, I think you should rank all the UCs that you are sincerely interested in and TAG one that’s highest on your list. Keep in mind that SD doesn’t guarantee the major you want, just acceptance. TAG is a GUARANTEE of acceptance provided you fulfill the requirements. It’s not merely to increase your chances. For Biochem, I would suggest putting LA/SD/I at the top of your list and SB/SC/R/M towards the bottom because they don’t have Biochem programs that are as strong as the others. Also, I think you should reconsider Davis. You will be rejected from Berkeley IB or MCB without having the entire Bio sequence completed (and also probably due to not having Ochem).

Oh and CC unit count doesn’t matter, so take as many classes as you want as long as you have no 4-yr university credit.

With your GPA if you have IGETC done, you can definitely TAG into UCSD. Like killmyentourage said, for UCSD, TAG does not guarantee acceptance into a particular major, but it does guarantee acceptance into the school. So, in the end, you may be accepted into UCSD but as undeclared. Although you will have the bare minimum of pre-reqs done, it seems like you are being too hard on yourself. You will definitely be accepted into UCR, and have a good shot at UCI, and UCSB.

Okay, I totally misunderstood the meaning of tag and what is used for. I was going to use tag for my safety school in case i did not get in at the other schools i applied to. Clearly, i now recognize that tagging a safety school is pointless. Now I know why I received the comments I did. I deeply thank you for clarifying that. With your advice I will

Replace UCR with UCSD (UCI’s biochemistry is not eligible for tag) in my tag application

Apply to UCLA and see what happens since I haven’t completed one semester of ochem

again i want to thank you for the information you provided me with how tag works. If it wasn’t for you and this thread I probably would have tagged UCR. (I was completely and utterly serious about tagging UCR). I was so ignorant :/

You actually can’t apply to UCI for Biochem. You have to apply as Bio and then apply for the Biochem major once you’re accepted.

Okay so therefore I could tag Irvine if i wanted to? Also, if I am accepted into UCSD as undeclared when would I be able to apply for the Biochem major?
