hi, as an engineering major since im a girl. met the admissions counselor for columbia yesterday

my GPA is 4.5 weighted, im in the top 5% of my graduating class (total 23 students)
my school does not offer any AP classes, but I will be taking 2 AP tests at the end of my senior year.
I take all the honors classes my school offers, and am currently taking Calc Honors, English Honors, American government Honors. I am also taking a Biology course at a community college.

Thank you so much! if you need anything else, let me know :)

haha, unfortunately, they dont rank us because we’re such a small class, the top 5% thing is a decile rank… and this magical school of ours is in central new jersey… our first ever graduating class was… 4 people :O

I’m really similar to you OP.
My graduating class is 18 people, one of which does nothing but study and has no friends.
I have never received a B in high school, yet I may get 2nd in my class because this other individual took a class through a college which will give him a slight advantage on gpa weight. I think he has 4.2 and I have 4.15 cumulative.
We have one AP course offered and only a few honors as of this year.

You have an excellent chance, which I have a feeling you already know. It’s okay to need reassurance, though. Find a way to make yourself stand out, write good essays, and you are in to Columbia or one of its peer schools. Just make sure you don’t come across as boring or they may pass you up in favor of “regional diversity” or some other nonsense reason.

and yeah nihility, i know what you mean… i will nvr get to be valedictorian lol cause we have this one genius in our class… hes just so far ahead of us

Yes. Your ECs are possibly a little weak, but the fact that you’re applying as an engineering major as a girl will help you tremendously. I mean, it’s obviously a dice roll with a school like Columbia, but you’ll be in the running for sure.

In terms of what kind of ECs…hmm, let me think about it. Of the people I knew who got into Columbia at my school, one was president of our debate team and science club, a member of NHS, was in a prestigious engineering program junior and senior year, and had gone to a competitive summer program for German. She was a bit of an anomaly, though. Another girl was really into theater and had had major parts in pretty much all of our plays in addition to NHS and everything. There was one kid, though, who didn’t really have much going for him EC-wise other than Quiz Bowl, but he was just brilliant. Work that angle. For your extracurricular activity essay, write about what’s important to you, and make sure it’s damn compelling. Your stats are very good and will put you in the running, as I have said, but your essays will make or break you.
