Chance me please!!!

Hi, all.

I have a really low GPA (3.4/5)
I have a 2210 SAT 1 super-score
I will take more SAT 2's.
I have a 32 on my ACT.

I am a fencer, I used to play ultimate frisbee.
I am a Chinese immigrant (I have a green card)
I skipped a grade.

However, I think I can write some pretty great essays...I have a flair for writing.
My mother also has cancer, which has hit me very hard throughout my high school years. I will probably mention this to colleges in my essays and whatnot.

Colleges I'm applying to:
Rutgers, NYU, Amherst College, Johns Hopkins, TCNJ, Umass, and BU.

What are my chances? (Safety: Rutgers, Top choices: Amherst/Hopkins)

Thanks!

You can apply to Hopkins and Amherst but be aware that because of your GPA your chances are VERY low. If your GPA was 3.4/4 it would be low but reasonable, but since it is out of 5 you should be aware that you probably will be disappointed.

Actually, your major matters for Rutgers. From now on, when I see people requesting to be chanced for Rutgers, I will have to ask the major or else they will receive three different chances for Rutgers (SAS/SEBS/MG, business/engineering and 0-6 PharmD respectively). Where does your intended major fall on Rutgers’ chancing categorization?

Rutgers SAS/SEBS/MG: Safety (they’re safeties for people at 3.4/1750)
Rutgers business/engineering: Reach (a case of high ACT/low GPA)
Rutgers 0-6 PharmD: Reach (high ACT/low GPA once again)
JHU: Reach
UMass: Safety
BU: High match
TCNJ: High match
Amherst: Reach
NYU: High match

MY BAD

My GPA is actually 3.9/5, 3.4/4.

So I guess that increases my chances :D

Oh?

Rutgers SAS/SEBS/MG: Safety (they’re safeties for people at 3.4/1750)
Rutgers business/engineering: Match (Rutgers look at weighted GPA also)
Rutgers 0-6 PharmD: High match (high ACT/low GPA once again)
JHU: Reach
UMass: Safety
BU: Low match
TCNJ: Low match
Amherst: Reach
NYU: Match

So having a higher GPA actually lessens my chance of getting into some of my choices? :o

My biggest question: is there an upward trend or a particular year when your GPA went down? Colleges might be more sympathetic if your GPA dropped the year your mom was diagnosed and then you got back on your feet.
I’m assuming you live in NJ
Rutgers - Safety
NYU - reach/target
Amherst College- Reach
Johns Hopkins-Reach
TCNJ - Safety
Umass- Depends which one? Safety/ Target
BU- Target/Reach
