Chance me please? :)

I’m a junior right now at a very competitive high school in the bay area, california.
My sophomore year grades were not good at all because of personal family issues, but there is an upward trend in my gpa.
i’m an asian female & i was raised here but was born in taiwan.
if it helps, i want to be a nurse or a physician’s assistant when i grow up, so i’ll probably be majoring in something biology related.

I’ve taken a few honors classes,
PreCalculus H, Chemistry H.
The AP Classes I’ve taken: AP Chinese, AP Biology, APUSH & I took General Psychology over the summer @ a community college which counts as an AP class i believe! :o
my school also doesn’t offer many ap classes, so i’ve been taking classes at my local community college.

SAT: 2190 CR: 760 W: 700 M: 730 (I might retake it?)
ACT: Possibly taking in the fall
SAT II: Chinese: 760, Taking Bio, US History, and Math level 2 before the school year ends. Aiming for at least a 780, 760, and 780 respectively.
GPA: 3.3 UW, 3.5 W
AP: Chinese (5), APUSH, APBiology,
*currently enrolled, taking exam this may
Anticipated senior schedule
-AP US gov
-Regular Econ
-AP Statistics
-Physiology
-Contemporary Lit
-Photography

this summer, i’m planning on volunteering at Stanford Hospital and tutoring kids in math.
I also have around 200 community service hours.
I’m also involved in DECA, a business club. I’m also planning on taking AP Calc AB & AP Chemistry at my local community college this summer!

if it helps, i also got a 231 on my psat, and i researched a little, and i think i have a prettty good chance at being a national merit semifinalist! i’m not 100% sure if my gpa will hold me back from being a finalist though. Is it wrong that I’m hoping that this will somewhat cushion my gpa??

so i know my gpa isn’t great at alll, but is there anything i can do to increase my chances of admission?!

buuuuuuuuuump

Take the most challenging courses in your remaining years of high school and show an upward trend; with these two attributes, along with your current scores, I would say that you’re definitely in. You should retake and score higher on the SAT if you wish to receive a decent amount of merit aid.

Congratulations, you just got into BU!

you seem like you have a decent chance!!

nice thanks guys! any othersss? buuump

bump pleaase!

I’d say you have a pretty good chance. However, as you have probably read in other BU threads, other students with “a pretty good chance” have been rejected or waitlisted. Like most reputable schools, BU considers its applicants holistically. Show passion for your intended major and career field, and definitely show interest in the school itself. People are often waitlisted because they view a school as a safety - or seem to. Emphasize personal growth (but not in a “look at how mature I am, guyz!” kind of way; focus more on overcoming adversity and explaining how the process changed you for the better) in your essays. Talk about interests beyond your major - foreign language; art; travel abroad; heck, even allude to how you’ve always wanted to learn about different religions, so you might take a couple extra courses just to indulge that interest. Oh - and do research. Allude to specific components of the school or its curriculum, like a particular seminar series offered in the fall or a university research center whose work you find particularly awesome. Basically: “I want to go to YOUR school, and here are ten school-specific reasons why.”

I think I went past what you were asking. Let me backtrack: Your stats are good. Definitely take the ACT; each standardized test uses a different reference group for scoring purposes, so people often score higher on one than the other. I recommend taking each test twice, if possible, just to see if you can do better. Keep it up with the extracurriculars. Just keep in mind that when you go to apply, test scores, GPA, and even extracurriculars can lay in the shadow of your essays.

¡Buena suerte! You’re doing fantastically so far.

@cmcyanide: COMPLETELY AGREE! Really really take into consideration everything cmcyanide said. I don’t want to sound pretentious or anything like that, but my application had almost everything that he/she recommended (except for research). I showed how much I wanted to go to BU in the “Why BU?” supplement. Key: I made it very personal, ex I mentioned places I would visit as a freshman, where I saw myself living (dorm), attending hockey games chanting “Terrier over Eagles!” LOL (that may have had a lot to do with my acceptance haha). Write your essays as if you were speaking to your parents’ friend. Be semiformal and relatable/approachable. Be specific! Do your research! Don’t be the bunch, be unique, seek to be remembered! Like cmcyanide said, do things that relate to your major to show real interest. If you decide to change your major later on, don’t worry, you will be able to. But show interest in SOMETHING before you apply. Of course, pay attention to your GPA, test scores etc but as you may have read, this isn’t the sole factor. I have a 1970 SAT and a 3.73 GPA and I got in because of what I mentioned above. I got accepted and although I didn’t receive merit scholarship (I didn’t know there was a deadline meh) I received almost full ride in my FA package with financial aid of 58,000 dollars. So, BU is my top choice at the moment. Still waiting for a couple more unis…

Honestly, keep doing what you’re doing, take what cmcyanide and I said into consideration and you’ll be a competitive applicant  Good luck!!

PS: This goes to everyone reading this!
