Chance me please!

Hi I am currently a junior in high school and my grades aren’t that great. I’m wondering if I have a shot at American.
My GPA is a 2.2 and my SAT scores are a 1790.
Break down is 600 Critical Reading, 570 Math, and 620 on Writing.

I have a ton of extracurriculars and do a lot in my community.
All of my classes are honors or advanced placement.
I have a medical condition that caused me to miss majority of my time in school which is why my grades are so low. I plan to explain that in my essay.

Chance me please?!?!?

OK definitely explain that in the essay but make sure it’s 25% about what happened and how you felt and the other 75% how you overcame it and make sure your essay is perfect and pristine!!! I wrote my essay on my brother and how he had cancer, and a month ago I was diagnosed with a rare genetic disease so I know where your coming from and time always heals everything :)

It’s great that your SAT’s are so high and it’s always nice to have extracurriculars.

Given the circumstances, I think you do fine but they really grade heavily on the essay so since you have time your big selling point should be the essay and extracurriculars. I’d also go in and talk to someone if possible before you apply maybe around November so they have a face with the name and can understand what’s going on from your personal view instead of just on paper.

These are my credentials:
-3.3 GPA
-Did not send SAT’s
-Worked on a farm in new York for 3 years in summer
-Varsity ski team
-Community service is big with me
-1 AP and I think 4 honors classes
-7.5 credits in sciences (I know, what was I thinking)
-essay was graded by 2 teachers, 3 friends, and parrents

And I got in! So don’t doubt yourself. Just go for it! I almost didn’t apply because my guidance counselor and others said I wasn’t good enough and now I’m enrolled for next year!

Thanks a lot!

Definitely apply ED1 if American is really where you want to go. Your chances of getting in at ED1 are greater than at RD.

Try to explain it in the essay but…if you can’t attend high school, you’ll have to prove to the admissions people that you can withstand college which is 100x the caliber. A 2.2 is very low, so you’ll really have to prove yourself, a 1790 SAT is not going to compensate.

If it was really significant to your development and you can put a positive spin on it (what you’ve taken from the exp, ect) write about it in the essay, but it may be better just to have a doctor’s note or a GC write about it, as you want to show who you are - personality, ect in your essay, not necessarily make up for poor grades. Alternatively, you can do that in the “extra” portion of the Common App.
