Chance me PLEASE!

Hi everyone,

I am a current senior applying to UChicago for EA. Here are my stats:

SAT: 2170 (700M | 730CR | 740WR)

SAT IIs: Literature (730), Math II (690), Chemistry (710), U.S. History (670) -- only sending two

GPA: 3.88 UW | 4.46 W

AP: World History - 3, U.S. History - 5, Chemistry - 4. Latin - 5, Eng. Lang. - 5,

Senior Courseload: AP U.S. Gov, AP Stat (took Honors Calc Junior yr), AP Micro/Macro Economics, AP Physics I, AP English Lit, AP Studio Art, Journalism/Newspaper

ECs:
A bunch of stuff w leadership positions; also attended prestigious selective summer programs and learned Mandarin on my own

Honors:
Latin, Newspaper, Art, community service, and Girl Scout awards; also NMSF and a member of Mu Alpha Theta, NHS, NAHS, and Latin Honor Society

Other:
- 8.5/10 Recommendations + extra rec from Journalism teacher who loves me
- Essays 8/10 -- interesting take on a trip abroad; everyone liked it
- GPA Upward Trend (went from 3.76 as a Freshman to a 3.92 in Junior yr)
-First Generation

I took a very rigorous course-load in my school (especially junior yr), however don't have the highest GPA. It is still very high, however there are people in my school who took a little less rigorous course-load and ended up with a 4.0 UW. I took 11 difficult APs, while most others have taken 7-9. I have a ton of leadership and distinct extra-curriculars, however am not sure how I'd compare alongside my peers. I'm interested in International Relations and languages, and absolutely love U of C. Any input would be helpful.

Also, I attend a prestigious private school in Florida and am applying to Columbia as well. I love U of C and CU both, and am still conflicted about which to apply early to. Based on my stats, if you think I have a better chance in one over the other, please voice it. My GPA will most probably pull up to a 3.95 by the end of this semester.

First generation + rigorous courses + decent test scores = You have a really good chance of getting in!!

I think Columbia and UChicago have different ways of evaluating candidates; Columbia has the traditional GPA, APs, and ECs way of looking at things, but I think UChicago actually looks at the essays a lot.

Since both are really competitive schools, I really think it is best if you focus on making your essays the best for U of C, and just apply to Columbia too (your stats are good for both schools, but UChcago looks at more than just stats)

Thank you ImNYUobsessed!! Any other thoughts?

bumppp

The average SAT for Chicago is 1530 your 1430 is on the low side, can you retake and increase your chances? Although it might be too late for EA, you will be deferred if not accepted, so retake will help.

I could retake, but I’m not the best test taker and have already taken it twice. Do you think ED to Columbia would balance that out more? Would I have a better chance early at CU?

Not really, the schools are comparable. Please also read the EA is extended to Nov 15 post on this board. In that, Uchicago, the rep from UC admission has already indicated the responses, so the number of apps this year, is “overwhelming”.

SAT 1430 is slightly low. I would recommend retaking.

Artloverplus – thank you!! I saw that earlier. I might retake.
