Chance me please!

Hi, I am an african american female student at a pretty competitive private high school. I would like to know what the people at CC think my chances are into getting into COLLEGE PARK...and some other universities. Unfortunately, my parents have limited me to only colleges that are in maryland, or very close..

Gender: F
Location: Baltimore, MD
College Class Year: 2012
High School: Private
Will apply for financial aid: Yes

Academics:

GPA - Weighted: 3.58
Class Size: 90

I went from taking cp classes to taking all honors classes sophomore through senior year. I am taking 2 (Bio and Calc) out of 3 AP classes offered senior year.

Scores:

SAT I Math: 620
SAT I Critical Reading: 520
SAT I Writing: 600
(I am aware of my very low SAT scores...almost didn't post because I was so embarrassed of this. My laziness led me to play around rather than study...will be taking it again. I however rank the highest among the other blacks at my school.)

ACT: 24 (Yes...low once again =[)

Extracurriculars:

Varsity Indoor Track (10)
Varsity Outdoor Track (10)
Karma Dogs (Organization that exposes abused kids to friendly animals/dogs)
200+ hours of community service
Summer Job at Johns Hopkins working as a Laboratory Assistant
Involved in many school-related clubs (9-11)
TAMARIND Day Camp Counselor (10)
Honor Roll (9-11)

Ok GPA, Low SAT scores, Ok ECS...my esteem is low at this time but I still look forward to your answers.

Where I am applying...
University of Maryland - College Park
UMBC
Penn State
GWU

You're not a typical admit to UMCP. However, you'd have decent chances due to your ethnicity. Penn state might not admit you, but if they do I'd assume UMCP would too. (And you'd most certainly go there over PSU due to money I assume). GWU is a reach and I don't know what UMBC is.

She's in-state for Maryland. IN.

UMBC may not take you, as they like to advertise themselves as an honors college.

GW and Penn State are probably out of your reach.

why do people assume that penn state is a reach school......look at there stats, and you'll see what i mean.

university of phoenix

To the OP, your stats are pretty decent for some of the schools you are looking at. Yes, your SAT scores are not the highest, but your GPA seems decent (3.4 weighted ish I'm assuming?) and your ECs are pretty nice. I would say that Penn State and Maryland are matches for you. The others are reaches, but you should still apply if it's really your dream to go to one of them. Try to work hard on your essays, since they can sometimes partially make up for a weak score on the SAT. Good luck and I hope you get into where you want to go!

Chance me back?

Thanks for the replies.

BUMP!

Penn State's low stats are a result of in-state kids. It's a little harder to get into for OOSers.

^ perhaps. But i'd still consider Penn state as a match for the OP.

I dunno, the GPA is a big problem. That 3.58 is weighted.

Gpa is low for penn state university park. GPA is 2/3 of admission for psu. The ok gpa, paired with the low sat, puts him on the fence. Hell, Penn State University Park is the highest ranked school on his list. Maybe you should check the stats again and you'llsee... the average gpa for incoming freshmen at Penn State UP is around 3.6-3.7 unweighted.

Sharp, I think you have a very good shot at all of these schools. They are all in a similar area of ranking and competitiveness. I am assuming UMCP will be your best bet because you are in-state. For Penn State, make sure to apply as early as possible. Admission is rolling, so the class will fill up. They are all great schools. Best of luck.

BUMP.
Thanks for the answers guys, however I would like more replies as to whether I would get into COLLEGE PARK. Thats my first choice and I'll be applying early admission.
