My situation is very unique, so let me explain. My state (WA), allows students to enter a program called Running Start if they wish, where they can take college classes at a community college for credit, and they can apply that credit to both HS and college. I enrolled in this last year, and basically flunked out. At my HS, 2 HS classes equal 1 College class credit wise, so my GPA went from a 3.6 to a 2.7 in one semester. I was basically unprepared, and got sloppy in my habits, basically not trying whatsoever. I have since gotten back into my regular high school program, and am doing very well.

Anyway....

SAT: 610 Writing
640 CR
600 Math
(One of the highest in my not so great school)

Resident of WA state.
Caucasian, Male.

2.7/4.0 GPA
Rank is about 200/320
Both low GPA and low rank are due to one semester of CC.

Took one semester on Honors English, One semester of Honors Spanish, and one semester of AP US History before enrolling in the program.
Took a year of A.P. Economics Sophmore year. All of my other classes were regular ones. I have not taken an extremely hard schedule, but I have not taken an easy one either.

I wrote my essays from the standpoint of explaining what happened in Community College. I said I was not ready, messed up, and failed. I took responsibility for it, said I was motivated and working on my study habits back in HS. I also said that I had moved on from that, am doing well, while making it clear what I had done before that one semester, as I had done very well in school. (All true)

What are my chances at?

Arizona
Arizona State
Indiana
Iowa
West Virginia
Colorado State
Colorado
Oregon
Oregon State
Washington State
Purdue

Also, how big of an effect do recommendations letters have at these universities? Is it worth my time to send it in? My counselor told me don't bother if they don't ask, because they won't look at it anyway, but I have a hard time believing that.
