Chances for Stanford? This is the Caltech board...

your sat I scores are on the low side, but your AP scores are excellent. hmm this is a tough one so im really not sure on your chances ( since you seem to be in a though financial situation)

congrats on succeeding with that family income btw...

Just wondering, did you post your Stanford chances thread in the Caltech board on pupose?

On the topic of your chances, I think you have a pretty decent shot. You're valedictorian and a low-income URM. Take my advice with a grain of salt though; I'm a high school senior, so there are probably people on these boards more qualified to give you your chances.

As far as Caltech goes, I have yet to see an accepted applicant with less than 720 on Math Lvl 2, and almost every single one (even those denied) have 750+. Not to metnion, you don't have anything else (that you've posted) that suggests the 670 was just a bad take, i.e. no AP Calc score, no math ECs, etc. If you really meant chances for Caltech, definitely raise this score.

Chemistry is kidn of low too (for Caltech at least), if you retake Math II you might want to retake this one as well. That being said, Stanford may be perfeclty happy with these scores, I have no idea.

I know several people in the same situation (underrepresented minority, low income, comparable academic qualifications). As long as you write compelling essays, your chances at Stanford and the ivies are better than most. This would probably be a deny in the Caltech pool unless you can get the scores up.

sorry for writing Stanford, I meant CAl Tech.

You meant Cal*t*ech ;)

Most probably in at Stanford, most probably not at Caltech.

How on earth would Caltech know he's of low income family? I can't see a field on common app to enter such kind of information.

I'm international btw.

They would know if he wrote about it in an essay, or more likely, his counselor mentioned in in that rec.

I'm only a highschools senior but from what I've heard, Caltech's application pool is much more self selecting than that of many other schools. As a result applicants as a whole tend to have good scores, EC's, Class Rank, etc. So more so than elsewhere you need something to set you apart. Thats what you do in your essays.

It might not seem that special to you but ask friends and family to find out. Then right about it in your essay and make sure you put in the work to play it up in the essay.

Good luck!

I don't see any redeeming aspects to those stats. Like it or not, the touchy-feelly stuff isn't going to cut it.

he got into Harvard which means caltech is better than Harvard.

or maybe that Caltech is more score-oriented...

Or both? :P
