ok so heres my deal:
i applied to UVa out of HS and was waitlisted and ultimately rejected. I tried to transfer my freshman year in college but i already knew i didnt have much of a chance and was rejected. i tried a third time (this time for spring 08) and was rejected but UVa offers a chance to forward your application for fall 08 so i figured i would accept since i really dont have much to lose.

stats:
College: Virginia Tech
year: i am supposed to be a sophomore but with the amount of credits i have (60+) i am classified as a junior.
GPA: had a horrible 1st sem and ended up with a 2.42 then i managed to pull it up to a 3.37 (this was my gpa when i applied for spring 08) until i received my grades for this past semester which caused it to fall to a 3.23.
Major: i told UVa that i would like to be an econ major but currently on my transcript it says i am an HTM (hospitality and tourism management) major so hopefully i can change that before they look at my application.
Credits: it has only been my 2nd year in college but i currently have 72 credits with a 3.23 (i received 6 from hs classes). i am supposed to graduate early from VT but i am willing to sacrifice credits if accepted to UVa.
Ecs: i am fairly involved with about 5 respectable organizations on campus so im not sure if that would be enough to impress them.
Recs: i have 2 so far. also how much do you think it will help if i attempt to get one from one of my former econ instructors who is an alumi (majored in econ) of UVa to write me one?

im not sure what else i can add to help gauge my chances but i will try to provide more info if asked. sorry this post is long!

Hmm..I'm not sure there is anything else you CAN do. Applying 3 times certainly makes you look like you wanna go badly...maybe they will take that into consideration.

If you don't get in this time...finish at VT. I mean..VT is a respectable school.

i mainly want to do it because of the ROTC program offered at UVa. VT has a good military program but the corps of cadets takes up way too much time and i would like to do other civillian activities during my time in college. also the economics program at UVa is more popular than the one at VT so thats another reason i would like to transfer.

also if it helps i did have 18 credits knocked out (only 6 will probably transfer, the others were engineering credits since at the time i thought i wanted to major in engineering) with a 3.72 at a VCCS while i was in hs. im not sure how UVa looks at that GPA and a 3.23 from VT (hopefully it will help my app).

also how much do you think the upward trend followed by a low grade semester will hurt?

thanks for the link paki. i remember seeing those stats last year i believe. can you find one where it states the average GPA of those accepted? ive looked everywhere and all i can find is on the transfer admissions website under FAQs where it simply states 3.5 (it doesnt mention if this GPA is for community college students or 4 year university students).

I would assume if it just says 3.5 then that means it is 3.5 for everyone (community college students and four year university students) they have accepted. If you are still wondering about that you can e-mail the school and they could probably clarify.

To improve your chances I would try and improve your GPA as much as possible. Maybe take a class or two during the summer? Then you have tons of summer time to devote to studying and since you will just be focusing on a few classes you could probably get good grades that would improve your GPA. How many credits do you take every semester? More than 12? Maybe shrink it down to just 12 (maybe less if you don't have to take 12 to stay on your parents health care) every semester so you are still a full time student but you have more time to devote to studying as opposed to doing an extra class or two. That would probably also improve your grades and not overload you with credits you will end up losing if you go to UVA.

i think everytime is right...
the average transfer GPA will be 3.5 ... for both community college and 4-year

On the suface, most universities tend not to differentiate between the GPA's of either type of institution .... however... in the background... they might do.

For example...
In UVA's FAQ...they said the GPA ranged from 2.8 to 4.0... I am sure that 2.8 didn't came from a community college....and that....probably 100% of the community college students accepted had a 3.5+ GPA .... whereas...for 4-year it might have varied anywhere from 3.0 to 4.0 ...

I think what they must also show in their stats...is how many community college students and how many 4-year were accepted.....and yeah!...furnishing avg. GPA will be even better!....

Contact UVA Admissions... I am sure they will be able to tell u...even if they don't have that online...

yeah ill definately have to do that (after christmas break that is). but for the meantime does anyone know of any friends that transferred to UVa. and where they went and what their GPA was?

ok so i called them and they said that they do take into consideration whether you come from a CC or a 4 year university but they didnt indicate how much effect it will have on their decision.

based on my stats how much of a chance do you guys think i have?

yeah... i need help in dis area as well.
Im thinking of transferring to UVA but... my GPA isnt dat good....

im from a 4 year college, in South Korea. Yonsei University. It is quite a good skool, so its really hard 2 get a god GPA.
