Chance Me! Please!

Hey I'm a rising sophmore (I know, kind of young for the chance forum), but i just want some tips on how to get into HYPMS, and if my credentials right now are ok. I dont' need financial aid. Thanks in advance!

My bio

Race: 1st generation Indian--born in New Jersey
Area: Charlotte, NC--attending a high school thats been around for only 3 years, but is respected in the area. Our first graduation class was last year and had a few Dukes, a lot of UNCs, and a Harvard

I want to pursue a career in medicine. I'm aspiring to become a cardiologist

My stats

Freshman year:

Honors English 1-- 98/A
Honors Geometry-- 99/A
Sports Medicine-- 100/A
Debate (we have to take the class in order to be in the club)-- 98/A
Health/PE (Graduation requirement)-- 97/A
Honors Biology-- 95/A
Honors World History-- 96/A
Spanish 2 (our school doesnt offer an Honors Spanish 2 class)-- 96/A

GPA-- 4.0 UW/ 4.5 W

PSAT-- 167, 80th percentile
Not too great, but I've been working on it all summer. I'm expecting in the 90s percentile-wise this year

So far, my class rank is 11/468. Its kind of hard to rank freshman because there aren't many classes you can take to differentiate yourself from the rest. I'm expecting to be in the top 5 by the end of the 08-09 school year.

EC:

-50+ hours volunteering at the local YMCA
-Signing up for volunteer service at CMC hospital-- goal is to put in 100+ hours there
-Debate team-- 100 NFL points so far. My goal is 500+ by then end of my high school career
-Starting two clubs next year, Student Humanitarian Organization and Reach Out
-Part of HOSA, DECA, Spanish Club, and Diversity Club
-Starting a summer-long internship next summer with my dad's friend, who is an experienced cardiologist
-Varsity golf team
-I play electric guitar for fun

Sophomore year schedule:

Honors Chemistry
Honors English 2
Honors Civics/Economics
Honors Spanish 3
Honors Algebra 2 (1st semester)
Honors Pre-Calculus (2nd semester)
Debate 2
AP Earth/Enviornmental Science

I'm planning on taking 3 SAT IIs by the end of this year
-Math Level 1
-Math Level 2
-Literature

I'm going to take Biology, Chemistry, and Physics during/after my junior year, depending on the semester in which I take the AP class

By then end of my high school career, I'm planning on completing 12-14 AP classes, along with Calculus 3 at CPCC, the local community college, during my senior year. I'm planning on taking all of the AP Math and Science courses offered at my school.

Every post is greatly appreciated and so are tips for the rest of my high school career.

Thanks!

dude u are so lucky, u can change ur classes every semester. I think u should have taken a lot of AP classes in ur sophomore year. I'm taking 3 ap classes and that isn't even great at all. U should have taken AP econ since honors civic/economics wouldn't matter. Impressive resume, why debate though? Do u love debating? (that was a stupid question) but keep on trying! jia you!

oh yeah, i'm a sophomore

dude i dont have the option of taking 3 APs. Our school only offers 2 to sophomores and I can only take 1 since i'm taking debate. Since i want to pursue a career in medicine, i feel like AP earth/enviornmental is a better choice than AP Psychology, which is the other course they offer. hey where are u from? ur pretty lucky to be able to take 3 APs haha

NFL pts are largely meaningless as you can win 5 tournaments but still have less points than someone who attended 50. Instead focus on making it to outrounds at as many tournaments as possible, qualifying for the TOC (tournament of champions), winning state level competition and or your state tournament.

k dude thanks for the info
i'll keep that in mind

Hey there! Thanks for reading my chance thread. =)

You sound like you're heading on the right track. Cardiologist is a long, long road, but your courses are looking good. A suggestion would be to focus on that internship with your dad's friend and look out for possible research for an Intelesque science competition. I know that's reaching a little bit, but if you're really devoted to cardiology it'll look really impressive. More than a smörgåsbord of clubs. =)

I think my school is the only one on CC that I've seen that you are not allowed to take APs until your junior year. :/

I think you're on the right track. Your freshmen grades are excellent and your ECs are good.

hey thanks i really want to go to HYPMS and jhu for med school
i'll look out for some science competitions in charlotte
thanks for reading my thread!
i really need some tips from some excelling high schoolers

yeah my school just started offering sophomores AP classes this year
only 2, Earth/Envionmental and Psychology
thanks!

You have some good EC's- especially with starting two clubs.
I'd say do what you love in high school and keep getting good grades and you'll be in the running.

thanks for the tips captainfalcon42

Most colleges don't use MathI SATII subject test so I would not advise you to take it. Take the MathIIC (save the money for some other test like chem or physics)
