Chance me & I'll chance back-- I have to make a decision on where to apply tonight so PLEASE help

I'm a HS senior at a top NJ public school

What I have against me: My GPA

School only does weighted, out of 4.0, and no class rank
Freshman year: 3.2 (All honors)
Sophomore year: 3.4 (1 advanced)
Junior year: 3.9 (1AP, 1 honors, 1 advanced & 3 credits from a local uni for the honors class)
Senior year: not sure about GPA yet (1 advanced, 1 honors, 3 APs)
Total: 3.5/4.0

My transition from MS to HS was very difficult since I took on a huge course load without understanding how much work it really was. My sophomore year, I was just not working as hard as I should have, I can't deny that. Though i pulled myself together and grew up, and worked my butt of my junior year, and I'm still working hard now.

What I have going for me:

Top NJ public school known for its rigorous course load

I am Nepalese and I am a citizen there-- I have a greencard (hopefully this is a tiny bit unique?)

Great ECs: Hospital volunteer for 3 years, secretary & co founder of Women's Rights Club, VP & co founder of doctor who club, Chief Justice of Varisty debate for 2 years, Summer Surgical Internship at the hospital, JV track for fresh & soph year (had to stop bc of injury), state certified EMT, tutor & babysitter & I volunteered with the 2009 CNN Hero at her refuge for trafficked women in my home country, Nepal

SAT: 2120-- M 690/ CR 730/ W 700

I think my essay is good-- it's about my ability to balance my Nepali lifestyle with my American one, and how that has made me a more well rounded, understanding, and cultured person.

Please chance me for these schools: Tufts, Wellesley, Columbia**, TCNJ, Lafayette

Please be completely honest, and thanks so much!

**My mom went to Columbia Law school (which I know, does not make me a legacy) but I was hoping to delineate on how I basically grew up on the campus while she was at school every day. That Columbia was a part of my past, and Id' like for it to be a part of my future kind of thing.

bump

The only school I know well enough to say you have a good chance of getting into is Tufts. From my friends experiences, they seem to place a lot of emphasis on EC’s and the essay. My friend’s GPA is around yours (he struggled a lot in math classes) and was accepted with huge grant money based largely on his EC’s and essay. He also said tufts was mostly divided into people who had really high grades and test scores, and people who didn’t have as high of grades but did incredible things. I think you have more strengths going for you than weaknesses. Also, tufts loves international so your Nepalese citizenship and essay will do you well. Good luck :)

For Columbia, I’d give it a fifth of a chance, but accounting for a strong personal statement… closer to to flipping a coin three times and expecting to land on heads each time. You’re well into the the Critical Reading average, but barely behind on Math and Writing. They put SAT in the calculation. ECs and character/personal qualities are highly stressed, so you have a chance to raising this up a sliver.

Lafayatte, you’ve got a relative fair chance. Like flipping the coin twice and getting heads at least once. You’re well on the way there, and are well above their SAT score average. ECs, Volunteering, PS, will matter a tad bit less into this one. Your score on Critical Reading is great however for this school.

Based on excellent SAT scores and extracurriculars/volunteering (high focus on these), with the upward grade trend, slightly higher than 50/50 on TCNJ, but a bit lower chance than Lafayette. TCNJ’s ave. scores are in the flat 600s. Play a game of rock-paper-scissors for three rounds with a middle schooler.

Tufts will be a sliver above par with Columbia. Your PS is greatly taken into account for them. A 9/10 may put you between TCNJ and Columbia.

Wellesley, close to Tufts chances, although your SATs are there, the average GPA of admission is in the ballpark of upper 3.8s. A personal statement emphasizing personal qualities/character may raise it a slight notch.

Hope this helps! Above all… there is a very small chance you’ll get rejected too ALL of them. 1. Lafayette and 2. TCNJ are likely candidates. Make sure above all to have a safety net! This is important. Good luck!

I think you have a good chance for Columbia. I dont know the other colleges well enough, Im sorry. :frowning: But your being form Nepal does make you stick out, I think.

Odds at Columbia are low because of your low GPA and average SAT score. The others you have a better shot at. Oh and @findyaus1… You stated he had a 1/5 chance but if he had a strong personal statement he’d have a chance “closer to to flipping a coin three times and expecting to land on heads each time.” Just so you know, that’s a 1/8 chance (lower than if he didn’t have a personal statement) haha.

@Smithg1227 Eh, it’s late at night here. Apologies. Was cognizant that something was wrong with the numbers and grammar before coming back, haha. Thanks for catching.

Hi! I think you being Nepali is a really good thing and your ECs are also amazing
Tufts: Match/low reach
Lafayette: Match
TCNJ: Match
Columbia: Reach
