Chance Me Please!

I am going to be a senior next year, I am worried about where I might end up. So please help me out to get an idea of where I stand. Well here it is...

Ethnicity/Sex: Indian Male

State: CA

Parent's Income: My parents BOTH lost their jobs this year, most of my junior year was on my parents savings and unemployment. My mom recently got her job back, my dad just got his as well; he works in Boston now, and now I am living with my mom and my brother. But, as I said before, they both lost their jobs this year; which was my worst year GPA wise (If that helps at all). When they both have a job, I think they make around 100k-130k.

UW GPA: 3.417
UC GPA: 3.65ish
W GPA: 3.7ish

=(

Class Rank: 70-80/ 515 Top 20% for sure, UC wise, maybe top 10%?

SAT: 2050
Math: 680 =/
Writing: 680
Reading: 690

SAT 2:
Math: 670. (Retaking aiming for 800)
History: 630
Chem: In Oct. (Going for 800)

AP/HON:

My courses have been very rigorous. I have taken 3 or 4 Hon/AP out of 6 classes every year. We cant take AP classes till our Junior year... So, One AP Junior year, 4 next year. Total Hon/ AP classes: 14

USH: 3
Calc AB: Next Year
Stats: Next Year
Gov: Next Year
Ecom: Next Year

EC'S:

Summer Classes:

Took Psychology at a CC my Sophomore summer and got an A

This Summer, I am taking Chem 1A at UC Berkeley through the pre-collegiate program. It is a Undergrad class offered for High school students with a better then a B average. My parents had to bust out a lot of money for this, they insisted I go here, instead of a CC. Its basically a Berkeley class, you get 4 UC credits, a Letter of Recommendation and so on. Hoping to do well in this and get an 800 on Chem SAT.

Clubs:

Mediocre here... CSF 3 years.

Volunteering:

I have worked at a local community center for a program called Teen Leadership Academy. They say working there is as good as being on ASB, Boy Scouts,etc...

Freshman Summer: 88 hours
Sophomore Summer: 80 Hours
Junior Summer: I hope to do 40+ hours, will have to try to do this with my summer class.

I tutored math at my school for 30 hours my Junior year, 2 hours a week through the course of the year.

Total: Before summer: 198. After Summer: Prob will have 235-250.

Major: Engineering, any of these three will suffice: Electrical, Chemical, Bio. I will go Undeclared if it is easier to get in.

I would like to go to a mid tier or high tier UC if possible. I looked through the point system, I am not sure, I guess I could get in with the personal points. Also, if they give me the leadership points, not sure if my Teen Leadership Academy will count.

Right now, I see you as borderline, leaning more towards the better side.

Basically with your parents unemployment situation, mention that in the 3rd essay (which doesnt have to be an essay, just a quick statement of what happened) because you’ll get a good amount of points. Remember to explain that is why you’re GPA fell and go in depth when explaining when you’re writing this.

Also, list everything else that you had put down here and you should get the full points for EC categories and you may or may not get points for the amount of classes you’ve taken, that depends on if you take more classes and how many classes you’ve taken in school as well.

As for you’re major, that is up to you. No doubt the major will be impacted, so it’ll be a bit harder to get into. But also keep in mind that if you go undeclared planning to switch into the major later on, you have to work your butt off and be at the top of your class in grades so when you apply for the major later on, you will get in. My personal recommendation is that you try to get in off the bat because there are several cutoffs… the admissions one, and the higher cutoff to get into major if its impacted.

Other than that, good luck with the application process

electrical and chemical aren’t impacted bio is tho…

Thank You very much for the answer.

I will be sure to include that in the third essay, I did not know about this, thank you.

Also, I will have taken (Including senior year right?) 44 a-g courses. Which I believe gives me the full points.

It’s too hard to tell, but since UCSD is point system, your most likely a reach or match, not sure.

Thank You to everyone answering. Keep them coming.

I have a question regarding all UC’s. If you apply for some major and you don’t get it, do they tell you that you got into the second choice? Or no choice, but you can get in Undeclared?

At most universities if your first choice isn’t picked, its your second. If not, then it goes undeclared. It’s best to go into a university undeclared, unless the major your REALLY want is impacted, then you pick that.

^Alright thanks.

But some students at Cal told me, if you want to go into Engineering for Cal, you must apply engineering. But I am assuming that one could go undeclared and then reapply or transfer or something? (This is probably the impacted part that you are talking about?)

Cal’s engineering department is impacted I think. Not sure if ALL is impacted, but some are. So if your major for Cal is engineer, just hope you get in, or it will be a pain in the ass to transfer in, if that is possible

Alexander,

Impacted or not with UCSD you should put down what you want your major to be. There are 2 general cutoffs and the possible 3rd one with the point system.

This is the order w/ points increasing with each cutoff…

1st cutoff— Winter admissions
2nd cutoff— Fall admissions
3rd cutoff— Major

Essentially, if you dont make the Major cutoff (if its impacted) you’ll be given your other major assuming you meet the points for that. If you dont meet the required points for either, you’re going to be given fall admission with an undeclared major. So when you apply, decide what you want to do with the other schools, but with SD, definitely declare something that you think you want to do.

^Will do.

I have a question about financial aid. Does it hurt to apply for it? I am not sure if I will get much, but I will take anything I get, if it doesn’t hurt my chances. Any scholarships that i could qualify for? Besides the private ones.

^Question!

bump!

Why would Financial Aid hurt admission?! Wherever you heard that from slap them or "lol’ at them.

^ not a mean remark, just funny.

Your question: By all MEANS apply for FA. ANY KIND of money HELPS.

I heard from somewhere, maybe here or from friends that when you apply for financial aid, you are put into a separate pool of applicants?

Not true?

Well whoever told you, they were lying.

You’re application is viewed the same. FA wont affect it in any way what-so-ever

Here:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/449605-how-much-does-not-applying-financial-aid-change-admissions-chances-2.html</a></p>

Nvm… it seems to apply to the Ivies or to only international students, too long to read right now.

okay - I have to also add “by all means apply for FA” !!! anything you get will help!

I wish you the best of luck with everything.

Just hope you have other points like a personal injury or first generation or low income or bad school or some good leadership cuz it’ll be hard for you to get in with your stats alone. as for community service, UCSD only adds the 2 years you did the most hours in and not all four years and it’s 300 points max for 200 hours within 2 years. If you only have 100 hours it’s 150 points. If you don’t even have 100 hours in two years it’s zero.

Freshman Summer- 88 (going into 10th)
Sophomore summer- 80 (going into 11th)
Junior Year- 30 (11th)
Junior Summer- 40+ (going into 12th)

omg… please tell me my Junior summer will count, or else its 198…

Can some one break down the points for me?

<a href=“Yahoo | Mail, Weather, Search, Politics, News, Finance, Sports & Videos”>Yahoo | Mail, Weather, Search, Politics, News, Finance, Sports & Videos;

Academic Max(GPA, SAT’S, 500 for Courses (44) ) : 7040
Volunteering (If everything counts) : 300
pre-collegiate/motivational and enrichment programs (2 years, Pre Collegiate Class, SAT class) : 150

Then come the points I don’t know I will get…

Leadership (Minor roles for 3 years at TRL, like a camp counselor, don’t know if this counts): 150
Less-Severe Event: 250

More then likely, I did these wrong, so some one help?
