Greetings!

I realize there are A LOT of these threads, but it's always fun to hear what people have to say about you, specifically. Anyways, I would LOVE to go to Northwestern; you could consider it my "Reach School" or "Dream School." I am a rising senior at a very prestigious/competitive, 3-year public high school in the Midwest. A few years ago, my high school was featured in Newsweek's "List of the 1200 Top High Schools in America"; we placed in the top 100. Yay!

STATS:

G.P.A. - 3.8 UNWEIGHTED

My high school does not rank. I believe my weighted G.P.A. is around a 4.0. Also, this figure excludes 9th grade (do most high schools do this?).

ACT Composite Score - 31 (35 English, 35 Reading, 27 Math, 27 Science)

I have taken the ACT three times and have improved by three points each time. I know I can raise my math score with a little bit of practice (if only it was not timed!); should I take it once more? I know three times is already a lot.

EXTRACURRICULARS:

Student Council - 3 years (I will be the President this upcoming year.)

Sober Squad - 3 years (A group of students who pledge to be sober throughout their high school careers. We talk to elementary and middle school students in our district about sobriety and why it is a good choice to stay sober throughout high school.)

Mock Trial - 4 years (I was the captain of my team sophomore year. I have also lettered twice.)

Work - 3 years (I operate the concession stand at the local hockey rink.)

Was chosen to represent my school at HOBY (Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership camp... don't know if that helps.)

Let me know if I am forgetting anything.

Thank you for your feedback!

I think with ED you have a good chance…with RD, my friend with better stats got rejected. College admissions are very unpredictable. Good luck!

Your ACT is probably a little low. Instead of taking it a fourth time, why not take the SAT and see how you do? Most people do better on one than the other. Maybe you’ll get a better SAT score.

Honestly I don’t know how that ACT compares to an SAT, but… I was admitted with what most CCers would consider a terrible SAT (2000) and your exact GPA. At the same time, however, I applied as a Communication major and had very media-driven ECs and displayed a true passion for what the school is all about in my personal statements. Make sure that you highlight a specific passion in a creatively written essay and I think you could be in the running. If I can get in, ANYTHING can happen.

PM me if you ever need any help. I was in your place last summer!

Sorry to burst your bubble, but honestly I wouldn’t bother posting chance threads on the internet…Most people here are in the same place as you are, applying for college and posting their own chance threads. Others may have been accepted but you will never know why exactly. These threads are just going to give you false hope. Trust me, I’ve been there^^ Just do your best on your application, and if you think it’s a good fit for you, then definitely apply. I wish you the best of luck!

A 3.8 UW GPA is competitive coming, as you indicate, from a prestigious and respected high school. But you haven’t indicated what your curriculum is like. Have you been taking the hardest courses offered at your school? How many APs? Did you have any junior year and, if so, how did you do on the AP exams?
The 31 ACT is a marginal score; it neither kills you outright nor does it help one bit. If you could take it over and bring your score up a point (or even better, two), you would be a much stronger candidate at NU.
Good luck.

Which undergraduate program are you applying to? ED you have a decent shot at any of them, but there is certainly some variability- if you’re applying to SESP I’d give you higher odds than to Weinberg assuming you can spin why you’re applying to SESP.

No sure thing, but you knew that. Best of luck.
