Chance me RD?

Hey guys, I'm wondering about my chances to get into Rice. I have a few things going for me and a few things going against me, so I'm not sure how it will go.

Normally, I'd be very confident in my chances for admission, but there is one problem. my college counseling team, which has now gotten 1 kid out of about 30 into their early decision choices, told me not to fill out the "which other colleges are you applying to" blank in the essay. foolishly, I didn't research the topic before submitting my application, so I left it blank. I'm only applying to about three other schools, but still I lied to the college. after reading up here, I realize it was a bad decision. honestly, I have no idea what I was thinking, but this may really hurt me.

Additionally, I'm local, and I go to a small high school. five kids (out of a class of 61) applied ED and one of them got accepted. his stats are worse than mine, but he is ED and I'm RD, and based on the fact that 5 people applied ED from my school, they may be wondering why I didn't. Basically, I was a little bit stressed and worried about test scores, and also looking at other schools, so all these factors together motivated me not to apply anywhere ED.

Still, applying RD in a school that had a lot of kids apply ED, in conjunction with my blunder on the supplement, may put me completely out of the running, but I think my stats MIGHT make up for them, if I'm lucky. I also have a fantastic letter of rec from a professor within Rice, so hopefully that might mean something.

Here are my stats:

courseload:
IB HL Math
IB HL Biology
IB HL Literature
IB HL History
IB SL French
IB SL Physics

average: 94.04, school doesn't rank but unofficially 3rd out of 61
note: my school doesn't offer HL physics, or else I'd be taking that

scores
SAT superscore 2340 (780 math, 760 reading, 800 writing)
sat math lvl2 800
sat physics 790
sat biology 730

ec's
varsity cross country, varsity outdoor track, varsity soccer (not good enough to really make a difference in any of them though)
jazz band
professional Greek folk dancer
peer tutor in physics

letters of rec: both my teacher evaluations are really good, and for rice I have an additional letter of rec by a professor at the university, as mentioned earlier.

essays: very good in my opinion, with the exception of leaving the "which other schools are you applying to" field completely blank.

i wouldn’t worry about that part of the suppliment, because it was optional. you didn’t have to fill it out if you don’t want to. i don’t think it’s really considered lying, unless it was a mandatory blank to fill out…

but your courseload and tests scores look really nice. and also your EC’s especially since you’re varsity in all three sports, which shows dedication and hard work :)

good luck! wish you the best

If you left it blank and it wasn’t marked as required, you didn’t lie. You just chose not to provide optional information. However, providing that information doesn’t have any impact on admissions. If it was marked as required (I can’t remember whether it was), you should tell admissions which other schools you’re applying to.

The fact that others applied ED from your high school doesn’t mean you’re at a disadvantage for RD. It just means that you wanted to apply RD for at least one of the many reasons that students choose to apply RD instead of ED. Being at a disadvantage because someone else applied ED doesn’t make sense. Wondering why you didn’t apply ED doesn’t make sense either, as everyone who applies RD didn’t apply ED even though plenty of applicants applied ED.

I think you’re in good shape. Good luck!

Definitely don’t worry about the “other schools” question. If you are waitlisted/rejected it won’t be because of that question; rather, it’ll be because Rice didn’t see you as a good fit for their school or because they really wanted you but didn’t have space in the class. Happens to about 75% of the applicants every year so don’t stress.

Stats look good, the subjectives will determine whether or not you get in. Good luck!

Just to reiterate what others have said, I doubt you will be doomed by that question. I know of people who have changed their lists after turning in the application, and they still got in.

If you are still unsure, you can send Rice a note saying that you left that blank and here is where you applied.

Good Luck!

wow, awesome. thanks for the replies, I feel much better about my application now!
