Chance Me; Reapplying Applicant! (:

Hey there :)

Yes, yes, I know that one cannot truly chance me because nobody knows how the admissions officers think and the process is all very objective, but I'd just like an honest opinion on how YOU think I am as an applicant. I will be applying to Milton, Deerfield, Hotchkiss, Choate, Groton, St. Paul's, and Lawrenceville, in no particular order. I will be applying for a sophomore spot.

Academics:

SSAT: 752 (89%) Verbal; 800 (99%) Math; 794 (99%) Reading Comprehension; 2346 (99%) overall

GPA Unweighted: 3.81 (4 A's and 3 A-'s)

Other: High Honor Roll (93+ overall average in Middle School or 3.7+ GPA in High School) every quarter since sixth grade except for a 92.43 first quarter 6th grade

Extracurriculars

*Clubs: Community Service, Model United Nations [by try-outs, only six freshmen were chosen], Photography Club, Symphony Orchestra [by auditions]
*Sports: None in school, but I do horseback riding [Certified Horsemanship Association Level 2]
*Music: I've been playing violin for 4 years [Shanghai Conservatory of Music Grade 6 exam this October], piano for 10 years [Shanghai Musician Association Grade 6 exam October 2008], and I started vocal training about 2 years ago.
*Other: I will be sending in a CD with recordings of me on violin, piano, and vocals.

Subjective:

Interviews: I think my interviews all went great, because I wasn't nervous and it was more like a conversation than a Q&A session.

Essays: They should be alright, I am trying my best to show my personality in them instead of writing cliche and over-formal essays.

Teacher Recs: Should be great, my teachers all like me and I do well in all my classes.

Principle/Counselor Rec: Good, probably, though I've only known her for half a year.

Hook (if any): I don't know if this counts as a hook, probably not, but I'm a USA citizen who has the experience of living abroad in China for the past six years. I am also bilingual (English and Chinese, completely fluent) and am now taking Spanish as a third language.

Location/Person:

East Coast

Current School Type: Private/International

Other Factors: I am a full pay applicant and this is my second time applying. Last year I was waitlisted at Milton, Deerfield, Hotchkiss, Exeter, and Concord; rejected at Andover. Also, this year I actually visited the campuses in early October, as opposed to the alumni and off-campus interviews I did last year - hopefully this shows dedication?

That's about it. Whatcha guys think? :) I really think I improved my application from last year (see http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/prep-school-chances/1079063-chance-me-andover-exeter-milton-deerfield-hotchkiss-concord.html for my last year's chance thread), but I don't know if it's enough!

ok i think its really a crapshoot at all of the schools and you can never tell what they want, but I have a friend who got into milton with what I think are slightly worse stats. I think you seem within the acceptable range at all of these schools though. Good luck! Maybe one day we’ll be classmates!

hey aaralyn which international school do you go to??

@Ehphant; thank you for the advice! yeah, that would be crazy cool :)

@woowoo20; SAS, not going to type out the name for privacy reasons, but if you know schools in the area you should know mine. :D

yep i do 10 char

Reapplying and actually visiting the schools might enhance your probability of acceptance; however, there are many candidates with similar backgrounds and there are fewer spots open than in the Freshman year, as you no doubt know. I wish you luck.

Im pretty much in the same scenario … waitlisted at andover though, but with worse grades. interview&essays matter most BY FAR

@Weatherby; Yes, that is what I am hoping will happen and I am aware of that too. Gosh it seems like there are so many more people on CC this year applying for 10th grade instead of 9th. It’s pretty strange, to be honest. O.O

@prepscholar; Okay, I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks for commenting!

Anyone else care to comment? I’d really REALLY appreciate it. :)

BUMP! Any other ideas, guys? :D

You have the best SSAT score i have ever seen, it beats the previous record i’ve seen of 2343! Gratz!

lol I’m a chinese in America while ur an american chinese in China…nice contrast though.

Was going through my old posts and saw this! LOL

@HelloGuy; Wow that’s actually really cool, thanks!

@TrazCapDEV; That’s ironic haha well now I’m a Chinese in America too. :)
