Job/Work Experience: Worked at my Father's grocery store whenever he was short of employees. I would generally work a 10 hour day (satudays) on the rare days he needed me, but it was never something I was committed to.
Volunteer/Community Service: Babe Ruth Baseball Junior Division (13-15 Year olds) Coach. Coached Regular Seasons as well as fall leagues. Ran Instructional camps as well. I also had the privilege of coaching a 13 year old all star team. At this same league I coached for I work on the field every morning before games and renovations in the off-season. In Addition to coaching and working on the field I often worked concessions during nights whenever I wasnt playing myself in the older division. From this League is 500+ Hours. Also during the school year I will weekly spend my saturday mornings volunteering at an Animal Shelters. Right Now at 75 Hours but by end of school year I am expecting 100+
Currently I am in the Process of setting up a non profit organization in order to help promote youth sports in my surrounding areas to keep kids active and hopefully find a sport they love and follow a dream - hopefully it starts up soon!
Summer Activities: Summer Baseball, In 2014 Summer I will take Calculus III and Additional Topics of Vector Calculus Classes, General Volunteering
Essays: Hopefully they will be good :)
Teacher Recommendations: Planning on it coming from my BC teacher who I went in for help every morning at 7AM
Counselor Rec: I was always in her office talking about anything. I would go in there for a 5 minute question and we would talk for the whole period. I know it will be a good one
Additional Rec: I will ask me owner of the league I worked so much with and have had 500+ hours. He was with me for a large portion of those hours.

I’d say you’re a coin toss.

The nonprofit is cool. Think hard about how you will describe your activities in terms of leadership experience. Try to bring up your SAT/ACT scores – Rice doesn’t superscore. Rice does put a lot more effort into recruiting minorities, though I think it is ridiculous to assume that you got cheated out of a spot by a minority if you don’t get into a given school. Start early on essays and pour lots of effort into them. I disagree with the statement that you are a coin toss, but the admissions process is rigorous and getting more rigorous and also hard to predict, so no one is assured. I can try to answer any other questions. Good luck!

Low Reach

@jfking01: If you don’t think the OP is a coin toss, then what are his chances for Rice ED? That’s what he asked, after all.

I think it’s a low reach. I would normally have said low-mid reach, but ED will help, no doubt about it.
Your ACT is fine, great actually; I wouldn’t worry about it. Great job with an 800 on Math II Your GPA, however, is a bit disconcerting…
In addition, I personally think your activities are OK, but not great or excellent. What you should probably do is get cracking on the essays!
If you need any help or more specific “criticism”/suggestion, feel free to message me. I just finished the application process and am choosing between UCLA, Rice, and UPenn for next year. I can probably offer some relevant info, if you need help that is! Good luck :)

Thank you so far everyone it is much appreciated.

@noel597 Yes my unweighted GPA is low. However my weighted is A 4.82 if that makes up for that? I know I wasn’t very specific on my activities I just didn’t feel like listing them out in great detail compared to some of the volunteer work that some might not know what it really is. I feel like a big strength will be coming in with very evident math advancement (Applying as an engineer) so will the B’s in a honors English play as large as a role as they normally would?

For anyone, should I take the SAT with this ACT score? Oh my Writing subscore was a 10 by the way.

You could try the SAT if you wanted to, or take the ACT again. Honestly, a 33 is pretty good. Maybe get it to a 33 in which you can round down, not up? (average at 33.25, for example). If you can get it to a 34, even better.

That’s a really good weighted GPA, but I’m just saying that for the UC’s, unweighted GPA is super important. Is that weighted GPA inclusive of honors? Because most schools really don’t care about honors unless they lead to an AP class.

If you want to send me a detailed list of your activities, I can advise whether they’re strong or weak. I’ve read a lot of posts here and talked to a lot of people, so I think I can pretty accurately gauge.

Maybe it won’t matter as much as it would if you were, say, a linguistics major, but it’s still important as these schools want (I’m sure you’ve heard this a million time) “well-rounded” students.

If you have any more questions, let me know.
