Boy Scouts of America:
-Active in scouting for over 11 years
-Eagle Scout

National Fed Challenge Team:
-Economics Competition held at Federal Reserve Bank of NY
-President, Founder
-Led team of juniors and a sophomore to within one point of the semi-finals against teams that have veteran advisors, and at least one or two seniors.
-the school didn’t fund the competition, so we kind of went around the school’s back to do it, so I don’t know if that’s something good to mention in an essay, given that it made it significantly harder. My dad had to “advise” us, namely give group members rides to and from my house which is where we met.

Community Service Club:
-Sophomore Year Fundraising Chair for Relay for Life, top five per capita you fundraising in America
-Junior Year: Vice-President
-Senior Year: Maybe President, nominally it would make sense, I’m the vice-President and the President who is a senior is leaving, but I guess its not certain

Basketball Team:
-Two-Time Letterman
-Our school doesn’t have sports, but we can compete with our local town high schools, as opposed to playing for the Magnet school

Math Team:
-AMC: 94.5 (sophomore and junior years, I missed AIME by one question both years, which kinda sucks)
-Central Jersey Math League First Place (Team Award)
-New Jersey Math League Second Place (Team Award)
-Association of Mathematics Teachers of New Jersey Delta Division: First Place (Team Award)
-I play a small role on a relatively successful “team”

Prospective Major:
Environmental Studies/Economics Double Major

Schools that I’m applying to:
Yale
Penn (Wharton)
Princeton
Stanford
Harvard
Brown
Columbia
Claremont McKenna
Chicago
Cornell
UVA
NYU (Stern)
Michigan
UNC

So, where/how do I stand?

My thoughts:
Academically, I’m not bad, 2290 isn’t a bad score, and an A average at an “elite” Magnet high school is not bad either. But I clearly understand I’m no superstar. On the other hand, being an Eagle Scout as an Asian-American is pretty darn impressive/and I have a great deal of leadership in my extracurricular activities, and my extracurricular activities are all towards my prospective majors of envi studies and econ.

Your thoughts?

bumpity bump bump.

Your profile looks very good. I think you will get several acceptances from this list. Nonetheless, add a super-safety.

How about a school like Colgate?

I know this is probably not the best indicator, but I get hand written notes from their dean of admissions at the bottom of the letters they send out (i can tell b/c i lick my finger and tab it on the writing and the ink runs a bit).

how about Emory>?

You are a superstar, maybe not so much academically (but you’re still very above average there!), but your leadership and initiative show that you have great potential for doing something great/significant on campus and afterwards as an alumni.

If money’s an issue, look into Duke, WashU, and Vandy for merit scholarship opportunities, and you have a great shot at outside scholarships like AXA, Coke (well, depends on if you can get past their screwy-ridiculous first round survey), and Toyota.

I think you’re set and won’t be disappointed much in the spring if you write solid essays (it’d be good choice to write about one of your community involvements)

And colleges don’t have to know that the school didn’t fund the competition. It’s not really a lie if you don’t say anything…

Good luck!

thank you for your time and advice!

the only concern i have is if they look at the school profile and see that its not there on the list of school activities and i had it on my app they would think i’m lying. and it certainliy does add a bit to our team’s relative success given that we were adviser-less.

bump that.

I’m guessing that QPA is GPA…?

Well-rounded combination of EC’s and academics, I think…but yea, you should take another SAT 2. other than that looks good.

you’re probably screwed. with a transcript like that? and some of ur ecs are pretty fluffy, like the math ones. and half the stuff you listed is you as part of a team. so if the team does well it doesnt really say too much about you. and left out the part about you failing tech this year didn’t you? should probably take that into consideration

but overall, not bad bragging. quite shameless. the username was a nice touch.

i suggest looking into Rutgers, TCNJ, Stevens, and NJIT. UCC just to be sure

You’re not screwed. Rustyjack is clearly being facetious (though your math ECs are somewhat fluffy), unless you really failed “tech” (whatever that is lol).

Yale- high reach
Penn (Wharton) - reach
Princeton - high reach
Stanford - reach
Harvard - high reach
Brown - lower reach
Columbia - lower reach
Claremont McKenna - in
Chicago - depends on essays - lower reach
Cornell - high match/low reach
UVA - match
NYU (Stern) - match
Michigan - match
UNC - match

I have to agree with rustyjack, fluffy ECs, and basketball varsity? What position did you play, were you contributing that much, or was it something like being scorekeeper?

Basically, Rutgers+You=match
