I started high school off on a bad note--I just didn't take it seriously. My average GPA for sophomore and freshman year combined was about a 3.1, and I got C's regularly...

I am a junior now, and have since focused on academics more. I still have a few flukes...but if, hypothetically, I leave junior year with a 3.43 unweighted (which would make for about a 4.1 weighted) do I have a shot at UF?

Here are a few of the things I have under my belt so far...
- Class VP for 3 years
- IB program, I take many AP courses and higher level math
- National Honor Society
- Film National Honor Society (which I am secretary of)
- Various volunteer works and youth council member for a local non-profit (I am very ardent and active in this, helping the community when I can)
- Multicultural club for 3 years (I dance to represent India in a school performance that showcases various cultures representative of my school)

Projected SAT I am aiming for: 1900 (hopefully!)

I am really worried that my 1st two years of high school will prevent me from being admitted into UF, which is ultimately my dream school. But taking this situation, what are my chances of getting into it? My guess is that it's a long shot but I still would like to know...:/

Assuming you’re a Florida state resident (OOS is more competitive):

Your GPA may be a little low and your EC’s are fine. Try aiming for a 2000+ on the SAT, to put you in the 75%+ percentile (though a 1900 would be about the estimated median) to help compensate for any concerns on GPA. You have time to take the SAT twice; if you can, take it in June (June 1’st I think), if you don’t like the score, you’ll have the summer to prep before taking it again in Oct/Nov.

UF puts more focus on GPA (and class rigor) than Test scores (SAT/ACT). However, the holistic method used by UF puts 50% on academics (GPA/SAT, etc) and 50% on EC’s/essay. This summer’s a good time to work on that essay :)

Good Luck!

PS: If you do take the SAT in June, don’t waste time prepping for it, as your time would be better spent focusing on your classes and driving up your final GPA. Spend the summer doing prep work, if needed.

Have you considered retaking any classes from freshman or sophomore years online for grade forgiveness? Replacing a couple of Cs with As might help you out.

I have considered it, but I’m not really sure if I could retake them. For example, I got a C in AP European History, so it would be very difficult for me to retake this class due to the fact that it requires an AP exam. I take all IB and AP classes. In another instance I received a C in pre-IB english, so I’m not sure how that would work out either. Thank you for the suggestion, I’ll ask my guidance counselor about it!

But in the case that I do retake the class, would universities even account for it?
