Bad: Overall Low GPA
Good: rising GPA trend?, rigorous course load in my pleb opinion (might work against me because I took more than I could handle)
GPA was pretty low in fresh/soph year because my mom was mentally ill and suicidal and my overall mental state wasn't in the right place. Weak excuse but maybe explain that in college app?

Sorry that was a super long generic list.
I already know that my GPA is incredibly low for any school, but I was wondering (Since they supposedly have holistic admission) if I could still have a decent chance with all the other details of my high school life and also if I write decent essays.
PS: I’m an out of state student and I know that the competition has been increasing a lot in the past couple years.
I would really like to get into University of Washington Seattle.
Thank you for the help.
And if any Huskies would like to give any advice about the admission process that would be mucho appreciated.
They mainly look at unweighted G.P.A., and I assume it is the 3.5 in your 11th year.
You got a high SAT and ACT score.
Lots of honors and AP classes.
Lots of extracurricular.
Excuse doesn’t sound that weak, but could elaborate more, and have a positive ending.
So far you do seem like you have a really good chance. If it is a 3.5, it is only a little bit below average (which is a 3.7), but usually those with a 3.7 don’t have as much honors and AP as you though so that makes up for it.
There are also other factors you can include as well.
Are you in-of-state?
Are you a minority?
Are you the first of your family to go to college?
Though I would say you actually do have a really good chance of getting in. Just write a really good personal statement as well.
@Mewtwo My cumulative weighted GPA is actually 3.4 and unweighted is 3.2 which is far below average.
Also I’m out of state and an asian so I feel like those two factors will work against me somewhat.
For personal statement, I’m not sure if I should use up that space to explain my family situation and how I managed to grow as an individual due to that experience or if I should talk about my sports experience and how that developed my character into a more ambitious and passionate one.
Because I don’t really want to waste 600 words to make them think I’m making excuses about why my gpa was like that. But I also feel like it’s important to explain why it started off so low
You should perhaps explain why your G.P.A. is low, what happened, what you learned, and why you’re a different person now. You don’t want to make so many excuses, just get to the gist of it. Then just get to your main story, don’t talk so much about your grade because they would rather hear what you can bring to the UW community instead.
And minorities do get a bit of a boost in chance (such as southeast Asian, African American, pacific islander). So if you’re Chinese, that’s not really considered a minority. I heard that they’re trying to get more minorities involved in college and build a diverse community, based on the minority outreach sessions I went to for the UW.
3.2 is pretty far below the average. Though you definitely took a lot of APs (not sure about honors, if your school has that), so that’s a good thing.
You still have a good chance. You got at least an okay GPA based on all the AP classes you have, and you definitely have a lot of extracurriculars. I would suggest building on talking about what you would definitely build for the community based on what you learned. Your SAT and ACT scores are definitely really high though, above average especially.
I feel like we’re in the same boat here, I’m OOS, I have a 3.3 unweighted gpa lol, and high test scores too. From their website it says they review like that of a small private, so hopefully it’s holistic
