I would say you have a decent shot. Your GPA is a little low (unless your school has grade deflation). At my kids school I have found that class rank is a great indication. It is almost always the top 20 get in and if you are above that you don’t. Do you have access to Naviance (or whatever it is called?) That should give you a good idea based on others from your school (or is it school system?).

@TV4caster how many people were in your kid’s class in high school. The top 20 thing depends on the school. Mine has about 400 and the people in the top 20 have early gotten straight A’s or took easier classes mostly. For example, I know a friend who started off rough in freshmen year and then did a lot better and got in. She was not top 20. I also knew someone who was in top 20 and had a different scenario where he got straight a’s his freshman and sophomore year then got quite a few B’s his junior year and didn’t get in. I’m actually very curious as to how many were in his class?

@BB8764 There were about 430 I think. I am sure it varies school by school according to reputation/academic rigor (and intangibles like hooks, essays etc, obviously count) but someone told me that stat after checking with kids in her children’s grad years, and it really held for my kid’s year as well. You basically have to have a weighted 4.0 or better to get in at my kids school.

Like I said: I am sure there are outliers, but in general that seems to be pretty close to the case around here. When you think about it, nearly everyone accepted is in the top 10% of their class (and when you throw out athletes etc it is probably 100%). That essentially means you have to be at least top 40 in a class of 400 to have a chance. If I had to take a guess I would say that in general (note the words in general- there are obviously exceptions) top 1-3% is almost automatic for in-state; 4-6% is likely; 7-10% is possible.

Then again I could be completely wrong  One thing I think would make me wrong is a kid having a strong “hook” despite being closer to the top 10%. That probably ups your chance

Oh yes absolutely! My GC told us that when you are in the top 10% you just never know (except for those few at the very top)! @TV4caster

My GC also said it really depends more on when those Bs are that you get. Again what I said before, if you get those Bs early on, it’ll show improvement. If not, it puts you at a disadvantage even if you have the same gpa as one who had those improvements. @TV4caster

In my daughter’s class of 2013 only the top 2% got into UVA. They all had GPAs well over 4.0. We are in Southern VA close to W&M so most kids don’t apply there.

@Dragonflygarden My D1 was top 3 to 3.5% and not only got into W&M but got a “likely letter”. I don’t remember if anyone higher got in or not. And you are right, she (and others) all were well over 4.0
