Common App Essay: quirky. It was about pho and piano

Recs: One teacher wrote an outstanding 2 page rec-- he said I was one of the most talented and creative students he has encountered in 47 years of teaching the best. Idk about my other rec from my bio teacher. Hopefully it’s strong as I was one of her best students (no one got a 5 in all her AP bio classes). Also got a rec from my art teacher

Also, I'll apply ED II to Pomona if things don't work out... and also RD to Bowdoin, Wellesley, Tufts, and a few other places. If you have any input on my chances to these schools as well, I'd appreciate it!! :)

you seem really strong across the board, and if you communicated that list of accomplishments well, I’d say you’re a shoe-in. for perspective, Williams accepts about 45% of its ED app pool, and I’d definitely put you above the 55th percentile if I had to guess.

I’m curious, why did you choose to apply ED to williams?

There are no minors at Williams…

Foxboro, you know what I mean. *Concentrations

There are no concentrations in studio art or music at Williams either. Concentrations are groups of electives offered through interdepartmental programs (e.g. public health, Africana studies, cognitive science, etc.). You can double major if you’d like to study the areas you mentioned in some depth.

I know it’s confusing, but even though concentrations are described as minors on the admissions website, they really are not minors at all. A subject is offered either as a major or a concentration. Sometimes the concentrations only require five or six courses, but some have more requisites than some majors. You have to major in at least one subject; a concentration is something extra (I guess that is where the minor comparison comes in).

Anyway, if I may make a suggestion, I wouldn’t worry about the music major unless you are really interested in theory & composition. I play in many ensembles here, and music-major status has absolutely no bearing on your level of participation in music performance. If music is going to be your side interest but you still want to explore multiple subjects at Williams, use those precious 32 credits to study those other subjects. Send me a PM if you want to talk about anything in more detail (including the music)!

you have about an average shot (aka, a little under 50 percent). The 40-45 percent acceptance rate ED is deceptive – a high percentage of ED acceptances are recruited athletes, Questbridge applicants, legacies who have been given a good idea of how competitive they are for Williams, or true academic superstars. For someone who is a more typical (meaning still incredibly strong) applicant, the odds are substantially lower. Your academics are about average for that category of applicant, and as you note the only thing that might hurt you are a bit is your GPA/rank, but it’s certainly not a deal-breaker. Also, being an Asian female isn’t going to help you anywhere, but will probably hurt you less at Williams (which has a more balanced ethnic minority population than many of its peers) than at most elite schools. Your real plus which will certainly help you, and which you’ve been smart to emphasize, are your unusual music accomplishments – if Williams is looking particularly hard for a musician with your skill set, you probably stand an excellent shot. Nothing else in your application is going to really get you accepted, nor keep you from being accepted, but your focus on and accomplishments in the music arena will certainly help your cause. You were smart to apply ED. Good luck!

Another thing: Someone else from my school applied ED as a recruited athlete. Will this affect my chances more than those of someone applying from a different school? If that makes sense…

Thank you everyone!! =)

@super: Unless your academic stats is lower than that of the athlete, I doubt it. You have to understand that if u r unhooked, you r not in any special pool category that will make life easier for you.

Hello, I’m also very interested in attending Williams College in the upcoming fall. I’d like to major in Economics or Mathematics. I applied Early Decision.

I’m not from the USA, so I don’t know if my chances are better or worse. I’m actually from Donegal, Ireland, a small county up north along the coast. I attend an St. Andrews College, an international school in Dublin.

Please let me know what you think my chances are! Thanks!

I think you sound like you should get accepted. I would love to have your resume.

gingerbreadman, I think you know what we will say about your chances for ED. Your stats are phenomenal. But it would have helped if you found a cure to cancer too.

For less strong applicants like me, the decision is a lot more iffy. Ginger, chance me?

Run, run as fast as you can…I think gingerbreadman might be pulling your leg. St Andrews Dublin offers either the Irish leaving Certificate or the IB…not a single mention of any AP class options. Sometimes when things seem to good to be true, they just might be.

Unless he were at an American International school it would be unusual to have US style GPA.

Sorry, Supergrapez, I didn’t even get your original post. I have an app on my phone that just gives me the newest posts in any category with not much backtracking, so I did not see your original post. I probably look like I hop all over the dam place, which I guess I do.

I now see your original post and also think you also have a great resume. I don’t know about the no 5’s on APs, though. Other kids will have that.

Good luck this week.

Thank you Condor.

I’m feeling really anxious. Dunno what time decisions will come out…

Good luck everyone!!!
