Chance Me, with a negitive hook.

I have a bit of a problem about my application that's probably freaking me out much more than it should, so could you spare a quick chance for me? I'm applying to the CoE for EA, not sure exactly what I want to major in yet.

African American + Chinese male from an In-State public school.
GPA: 3.70 UW, No weighting at my school.
Rank: 8 of ~200
ACT: 32
-English: 34
-Math: 30
-Science: 32
-Reading 33
-Essay: 11
Course load has been the hardest I could do at the time; all honors and AP, plus a dual enrollment at Wayne State (public university in Detroit) for my last year.

AP:
10th Grade
Chemistry - 4
World History - 3

11th Grade
Physics B - 4
English Lang - 4
Microecon - 4
Statistics - 5

Plans for 12th Grade
Calculus BC
Both Physics C Exams
English Lit
Comp Sci (?)
Government (?)
Macroecon (?)
Bio (?)

Definite AP Scholar with Distinction, possibly National. Question marks means I may end up self studying those exams.

Essays: Should be golden. Writing has been a small passion mine, and I plan to spend a lot of time on this.
Recs: Unsure, not sure which teacher to choose; I haven't really made an impression on any of them.

Now the fun part.
So, because of sweeping disinterest (and, lets be honest, laziness), my extracurricular list for high school turned out to be pitifully small, with little leadership examples to be found anywhere. So far, it would be:

-Marching Band - 4 years, lots of dedication and love for the program.
-Honors Band and a few other miscellaneous band achievements.
-NHS - 4 years, Vice President this upcoming year, but no executive position beforehand.
-Pit Orchestra - 1 year for a few weeks
-Electrical and Computer Engineering camp at a local college, it was barely a camp, only 5 days.
-Started a self project this summer, basically doing research in miscellaneous things that interest me in order to both practice writing and just to really understand the world around me.

And that's about it. I know that UMich values the raw numbers highly (GPA/ACT), but the very small amount ECs worry me, and it's much too late to start working on anything now. Anybody have any idea how much they value them? Any help would really be appreciated, and I'll chance you back if you want!

Kinda low ACT math for CoE but who knows what the admissions people will think. Most people who respond with match or “you should be fine” or reach in these threads don’t really have any idea what they’re talking about. So to tell you the truth I don’t know whether you’ll get in, neither does the next guy who will post, and neither do you. Just apply and wait and see.

Go for it no one can really tell you what will happen, but my advice is to have someone proofread your essay  --for the spelling.

instate URM, definitely in. You might struggle in CoE if you only got a 30 on the ACT math section however.

This is what I mean, not true. I’m not saying you don’t stand a chance or shouldn’t apply but sh it like this is so prevalent in chance threads and it’s usually not the case.

They have around median stats PLUS being an instate URM, so I don’t see how this is anything but a lock.

Michigan does not consider race when it comes to admissions. I’m not sure why people are claiming that your URM status will be to your advantage because it wont.

The average GPA for a COE admit is a 3.9, while the average ACT is a 32. Your GPA is below average, but your course rigor is very good and your class rank is pretty decent considering your GPA is on the lower side for COE. Your ACT is good, but the admissions officer might find it odd that your math subscore was your lowest. The lack of extracurriculars wont be as damaging as you think, but it is will still hurt you a bit. In-state will help a little, but not too much. Michigan gives a slight advantage to underrepresented highschools, so if not many from your highschool go to UofM, you might have another slight advantage.

Overall I think you have a decent chance of admittance, but you are not a guaranteed admit like some other posters have implied.

Good luck!

I wouldn’t worry about the EC. What you have should be enough. The EC’s are not a major factor in the equation. Maybe the band angle can be played up in the essays.

GPA is OK not great. ACT should be good enough. If 3.7 students from your high school usually get in, then you will likely get in. I don’t know the acceptance rate from your high school.

Probably a match; maybe a slight reach.

I think your biggest concern should be your GPA, not ECs. You will have a good shot though.

You can say “Michigan doesn’t consider race” all you want, but we don’t live in that fairy tale world. I go to the university of Michigan, where there are fliers and posters on every other corner about diversity this and multiculitural that.

The fact is being an African American helps a lot. Emphasize that over being Chinese if you can. Being in state is big too.

Your stats are definitely good enough. I believe you’ll get in.

URM means you are in

you will get in your app is better then you think
