Chance me ? (:

Hi, I know how much you all hate these, so I apologize in advance. Anyways, I have horrible (actually, they are quite above average, but compared to columbians ... they are awful...)

SAT I 670 CR 680 M 800 W (11 Essay)
SAT II Took them yesterday, I don't know. French was brutal though.
GPA: Weighted = 3.77 UW. 3.6
^ I'll explain later.
Rank: Top 25%
Senior course load: AP BIO AP LIT AP PSYCH HRS MATH 4 HRS FRENCH COLLEGE SCULPTURE REG. PUBLIC SPEAKING AND PHILOSOPHY

Private, catholic school in MA. Very competitive
Clubs/Leadership: Newspaper club Editor , Science club VP, Humanitarian Club, French Club P, Multicultural (only as a freshman, all the others were all four years.)

Activities: Almost full time job, 25-30 hours per week, Volunteer at my local hospital, CCD teacher, Harvard SSP, Volunteer at Perkin's School for the Blind (I got an award for this in middle school, but I dont think that counts...), I am working on 3 novels that I will likely publish (writing is my passion), I write poems, lyrics, short stories and novels^, Soccer all four years but I suck (didnt make my school team lol), Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field all four years, but I suck as well haha I am not athletic at all... Piano since I was 5, Voice lessons since I was 13,

Awards: National Leadership Conference nominee and winner for my school department of medicine, NHS, 2 Time winner Pianist Award in middle school so this doesnt really count, but worth mentioning? Not many awards...

"Hooks" -Hipanic Female. (Immigrant) Very VERY underrepresented country, if that helps...

-Teacher Recommendations: Both teachers love me... hope.

Guidance Counselor: Will NOT be generic. He knows of my ridiculously arduous life... I hope he doesn't talk about it though, I don't want the pity vote.

-Essays: Excellent. It's about moving here, but it's not as generic as it sounds. Stresses perseverance and strength of character.

-Supplement essay: very specific

I know everything on this application is a weakness, but should I bother applying? I raised my GPA from a 2.8 to a 3.4 Freshman to Sophmore year and now I have a 3.77 weighted. (3.6 UW) It's a HUGE upward trend. I know a girl from my school got into Cornell (which I am also applying to) with 1870 SAT and a 4.1 weighted GPA.

Intended Major: Creative Writing/Biology

-OH I forgot to add. The reason my GPA is so low is because I did not care about school or my future at all until sophmore year. I have also had a very hard life, but like I said before, I want to refrain from stressing it.

Oh btw, this is my one sitting SAT. My SUPER SCORE<3 is 2260, but I can’t use it because I got a 530 on the math lol… bad day…

hi!
Well Columbia has a holistic admission process. The committee will take everything into consideration when its processing your application. But looking at your stats and unique situation, I think that you are a good candidate for an acceptance.

As for your application, I think you could perhaps talk about your life in your essay, not necessarily in a negative fashion but in a redeeming ‘I turned my life around’ fashion. Just a thought!

While this is true, they will look very favorably upon an underrepresented minority. That said, your SAT score is definitely well below the top 50-60% who are admitted into Ivy Leagues. Also you don’t have ANY acceptable sports. Perhaps if you did something very impressive and wrote about it, it would be cool. I remember advising one of my dorm mates at Harvard and he volunteered abroad for a year and talked about that in his application!

BTW, don’t get discouraged!

PS, the national Leadership conference is not really useful as I believe it is solely based upon how much money you have…correct me if I’m wrong but when I went, everyone that applied and paid got in…
