Hey guys. I'm a junior at a moderately large high school (~1600 kids).
My top two choices as of now are Northwestern and Yale, but I'm unsure which one i'd like to apply to early...

Stats as of now:

SAT I - haven't taken yet, but PSAT was a 227
SAT II - bad...670 in chem; I'm doing really well in physics though right now and plan on taking it in May and getting an 800. Also taking math II. (is it recommended that I take a humanities related SAT II?)
GPA (UW) - 3.85
Rank - probably top 10-15/400 or so
AP exams - taking two in May.. expecting a 4 in Spanish and a 5 in Lit
Senior courses - AP physics, honors human anatomy & physiology, AP chemistry, AP calculus BC, AP statistics, AP psychology, honors world literature, honors modern poetry
Extracurriculars - Top 16 swimmer for 6 years straight - some times are fast enough to swim at Division I level. Several piano competition awards. Member of All-state and regional orchestras (will participate in NWU orchestra if admitted). President and founder of Odyssey of the Mind at school. President of the Freethinker's club.
Work experience - none
Volunteer - 115+ hours
Summers - nothing special...
Essays and recs - will be good, especially my additional rec
Ethnicity and gender - Asian male (:/)

oh, and I'll probably be going into premed or some physics/engineering based major

Too early to say without test scores, but nothing screams Yale and for that matter, without scores, nothing screams NU either. You need to match your GPA with a good SAT and AP scores.

Also your just a junior, focus on finishing this year out strong and not where. You’re 5 steps ahead of yourself.

Do not apply to Yale early. Your stats are not good enough, not even close. Maybe NU, that could happen if you apply EA, as long as your SAT score is similar to your PSAT. I’m also currently a junior and NU is my first choice. (4.0, 31 ACT). I want to agree with the person above in saying to focus on school, not deciding which college, but I’m doing the exact same thing as you. Basically, if you can pull off all A’s this year NU should be a very good choice. Good luck!

thanks for the input
the thing is, my swimming is good enough so that I can swim at Yale (I’m also good friends with the Yale head coach).
I’m confident I can pull off at least a 3.9 this year, so my GPA should go up. An 800 on both physics and math II is definitely doable. and edit - my chem score was actually a 680…not that it matters.

Apply to Yale early because that is a reach for you. You already have a good shot at Northwestern because NU doesn’t require SAT IIs. Any SAT II is already ** above the average**.
