Research: I participated in an 8-week online math research camp called Camp Euclid. I investigated unsolved problems in topology, number theory, and higher dimensional geometry. (11)

I am about to begin an independent math research project with a University of Arizona professor as my mentor. I do not know the topic of research yet, but I presume that by college app time I will have a research paper to send to colleges. (11 12)

I will probably be one of the only applicants from my school with high-school research experience.

So, do I have a chance?

@Mathmuser, My sister and cousin both applied to University of Chicago and were rejected. It seems to be a very difficult university to get into, but your stats rate you quite high. The volunteer organization looks great, they really enjoy things like that. If I were you, I would put that you founded the organization instead of “co-founded”. It will give you a leg up against the other co-founders. The math camp seems really interesting and by your username I would assume that this is your choice major. I wish you luck in the application process, and as long as you know Jeffery, you should be fine.

Your numbers and EC are fine. Focus your energy on writing a few really good essays and you will be fine.

I think you are looking good. Particularly impressive ECs, with the research and music. Maybe more school-related EC’s? Everything else looks fine. As for the Ivies, I think you have a shot with your music abilities and great academics to present yourself as unique. Essays will matter, so focus on them - particularly for Chicago. Be creative. Also, take some subject tests…but I’d say both HYPSM and UChi are definitely worth applying to for you, you have great chances.

Also, I would enter some academic competitions and try to win awards, if possible. Just trying to point out anything that could be missing from your quite impressive app.

Great shot, but admissions are really random.

Don’t say you “founded” something when you actually “co-founded it”…bad advice. Even at UC and in the real world, teamwork and collaboration count…not to mention it is dishonest. In al honesty, there will be alot of candidates who look just like you on paper. Take a look at the thread where essays are posted. UC seems to like creativity ion htat arena and is really the only way to separate yourself from the pack with folks with similar stats.

Honestly, at University of Chicago, the essay is the defining factor. Make sure to respond to the unique essay question with your own style and do not try and write something with the intent of writing to please the admissions staff. Individuality in the essay is what will separate you as there are more qualified candidates than there are spots.

Hi, can you tell me what your experience is like at the Camp Euclid? My son just got accepted and we would like to know if it is worth doing. Any feedback is appreciated!
