Chance Me

Hi!

I am starting to apply to Columbia and was wondering how to best highlight my accomplishments. . . .

I have maintained over a 4.0 GPA (which includes 3 APs and Advanced Pre-Calculus) at an independent college prepatory school
I scored a 33 on the ACT
I have been a 3 sport athlete (cross-country, basketball, soccer) and have gone to the State Championship Meet for cross-country 3 years in a row
I have been an officer in student government all three years, plus participated in theater
I am active in several school clubs, including Model UN, National Honor Society, KICS (philanthropy), and Knowledge Bowl
I started the Video Production Club
have created award-winning documentaries for National History Day (won 1st place at the regional & state competitions, competed at the National level)
I have also created multiple short films that have been screened in film festivals across the country

Other things I have done include:
. Summer after 9th grade I was an assistant camp counselor at a day camp. I also helped at VBS for a week at my church, in addition to playing club basketball.
. Summer after 10th grade I studied film production at the New York Film Academy in NYC. I also participated in a mission trip to an Indian reservation in MT
. For three weeks this school year I studied immigration issues and culture in Spain
This summer I got an internship at a production company, where I have been a major contributer to a NASA web-series for kids about space exploration

So now that you know a little bit about me, do you think I have a shot at Columbia? What do you think would be best to focus on in my essays/short responses?

Hey there, I think you have a good chance at getting in. Your ACT, GPA and EC’s are all pretty impressive. I think the thing that will really make you stand out is that you are really in love with film. I would focus on that on your college admissions essay. That is definitely a plus. Colleges look for well-rounded student bodies, not individual students. I haven’t red many chances post about people with such awards for film. Especially, if you let your school know that Film study will be your area of study, that should increase your chances. Good luck!! Let me know how it all goes :)

That’s just your opinion. There are tones who graduated from Columbia who enjoyed their experience and really learned something there. There are many others who researched Columbia and visited Columbia who feel that they would truly be happy to attend there. Maybe before attending Columbia, you should have done more research and really decided on whether Columbia was the right fit for you or not…
