chance me?

i think GW is definitely a reach for me, but i'd like some other opinions. i didn't apply EA because i'd convinced myself i couldn't get in although my brother seems to think otherwise. does anyone know how the acceptance rate differs between EA and regular?
anyway, my stats (in short):

white female
Michigan
small public school, rural

class rank: 1 of about 75
GPA: 4.0 unweighted
ACT: 28 (my downfall..)

activities: michigan youth in government, treasurer of NHS, big brothers big sisters, marching/concert band, honor student sophomore yr, 4 yrs french, 200 hrs community service (MSSA), red cord honors program, 4 yrs Varsity tennis, worked during summer as camp counselor, volunteered w/ presidential campaign during freshman year

no alumni ties unfortunately. and i would apply to columbian college

my brother is a US diplomat and would be back in DC training for his next post if i were there in 2012. my dream is to work in the foreign service! but i wouldn't apply to the elliott school because it's much more competitive (from what i've gathered) and i'm not 100% sure about my major.

i'd love some honest input! thanks in advance

valedictorian certainly helps your chances and your act is still in range (although at the bottom). i think you’re ok…

there is also an EDII option with a deadline in january i think.

thanks! anyone else??

i’ve yet to apply… still kind of skeptical! but i mean, i’ll never know if i don’t try… but do you think it’s too late? does it look bad if you submit your app close to the deadline?

and last question, how good does my essay have to be? (with my stats)

you should definitely get in. put in your best effort on the essays though (you don’t want to screw those up and later regret it), and applying close to the deadline should not affect your application!

You should definitely try (I think you have a good chance), and really try hard on your essays because they look closely at them. And I would recommend you just apply to be in Elliott if you’re thinking International Affairs (not if you’re really unsure), if you look at the stats it’s not much more competitive (I think the SAT average was only 10 points higher than the university average, which isn’t much of a difference). I’m in Elliott now and it’s a great program, but there are a lot of specifics for the major and it’s easier to just be in the school as a freshmen than to transfer in (it is possible, but annoying), plus in Elliott there are less gen-ed requirements than Columbian. I’m biased about Elliott though, so don’t apply if you’re really unsure about your major (it will help you in the long-run if you are though).

And back to your chances, your stats look pretty decent so there’s no hurt in applying! And don’t worry about submitting in your application late, I applied RD and was editing my essays until the last minute…I think I submitted my commonapp 3 hours before it was due because I kept double and triple-checking my essays haha.

My advice on your essays, for the “why gw” one don’t just write about dc, actually put some research into it and talk about the opportunities you’ll have here at the school. GW excels in IA so that one shouldn’t be difficult to write about. I think the “why gw” essay is especially important for RD applicants to show interest (vs. ED apps who are legally bound to go here) And for your commonapp essay, just make sure it’s not generic and boring, I’m sure you can read up about how to write a good commonapp essay though.

Good luck with your applications!

try EDII !

you have a good chance, but honestly, i heard you really cant be chanced in RD because anything can happen . and really show interest. i mean its easier for EDers to show interest because well why would you bind yourself to a school if you didnt want to go there you know?
