Chance me!!

Hi,

I am a current Junior in high school. I come from a high achieving area and I am currently finishing up my high school years at a community college program.
Extra curriculars:
- club soccer for 8 years - team ranked 8th in state at one point
- varsity high school soccer for two years
- work (on and off)
- various summer jobs
- 300 volunteer hours and many unique ways of achieving them. i.e. working with disabled kids
- voice lessons

I have two amazing recommendation letters coming in from my teachers.

I had a unique high school experience because I took my junior and senior year classes at a community college through a special program. I will end with a full year of college credit. In this program, half of my classes for junior and senior year are college classes, so they are weighted.

My GPA is shown below -

Acad. GPA (9-12) 3.5 UW, 3.7 W
Total GPA (9-12) 3.6 UW, 3.82 W
Acad. GPA (10-12) 3.7 UW, 3.95 W

ACT: 29
E-28
M-31
R-26
S-30

The colleges that I am interested are:

University of Oregon
Seattle University
CU Boulder
NYU
UC Irvine
Fordham University
Tulane University
University of Puget Sound
UC Davis
UC Santa Barbara
Occidental University
Emory University
Cal Poly SLO
UCLA
UC Berkeley

Thank you so much for your time!!

I think your ECs are pretty strong – the work/volunteering is definitely a plus. Also, having a year of college credit is always great. :)

I would say Berkeley and UCLA are reaches (are you in state though? that might change things…) just because of your GPA and ACT. Maybe try to break 30 if you can…
On the whole though I think you have a good shot at most of those schools.

Best of luck! In the same boat as you, anxiously awaiting senior year.

What is your UC-weighted GPA? That will be absolutely critical in determining your prospects, especially at UCLA or UCB. My hunch is that they are probably super-reaches for you. Emory is probably a reach. Tulane a low-reach; Occidental high-match. CalPoly-SLO will depend on the major you apply for: it could be anything from a match to a super-reach.

Sorry - I posted prematurely. NYU chances will also depend on the school you’re applying to. Stern or Engineering are reaches, but CAS might be a high match. Fordham is also a high match, if you’re not applying to Gabelli Business. I’d rank UCSB a high-match, and everything else a match or safe.

Thanks guys! UC GPA is ~3.95 and I am in state. I would apply for business major or undeclared in most schools
I’m done with the ACT for good.

bump

Nyu seems like a good fit… But it depends which school you’re gonna go into!

Depending on what state you live in, Berkeley and UCLA (an maybe others, not sure) are reaches since they seem to favor Cali residents over OOS students. I live in GA and know a decent bit about Emory. Compared to my friends that have gone there, Emory is a slight reach for you.

Not too familiar with most of these schools, I haven’t really looked much at Cali. Are you instate cali? If so, the UCs would definitely be a good schools to shoot for. If you can, I’d try to take the ACT once more (depending on how many times you’ve taken it) just in case, for the slightly higher matches like UCSB.

@ladybug97 @DSjack‌ @nicobella I am in state for the UCs.

Sorry I’m not really sure how the uc system works… All the way over on the east coast here  but in state should raise your chances there, I’m assuming.

Berkeley, LA and NYU are slight reaches. Everything else seems to be either a match or a safety for you.

I would put NYU (depending on department), UCLA, Berkelely, and Emory as reaches. I don’t know enough about the rest of them to comment, but they seem like possible matches.

Everything is a match accept:

-NYU if Stern would be a reach
-UCLA reach
-UC Berkely Reach
-Emory Reach j

Nice Stats!

@yikesyikesyikes‌ @shawnspencer‌ @chewiebacca‌ thank you!

@peterg123 I think your ec’s are great, grades are good. I’m not sure about the rest but I think UCLA, UCB, Emory are reaches right now.
I know you mentioned you are done with ACT, but do consider giving it another try to get 30+/ try the SAT. IMO SAT is slightly more difficult but the vocab is formulaic, and can be studied for + you’d have a loot more time to take the exam. You’re a junior - you have time to bump up your standardised testing scores.
Maybe a higher ACT/SAT might not automatically get you into UCB/UCLA/Emory or any other school but you might regret if you got rejected and you hadn’t retaken ACT.
Just my two cents

Thanks! @econsftw
