Chance me - I'll chance back.

Hi,

I am a current Junior in high school. I come from a high achieving area and I am currently finishing up my high school years at a community college program.
I have tons of extra curriculars: varsity soccer, competitive club soccer, work (on and off), various summer jobs, 300 volunteer hours, and voice lessons.
I have two amazing recommendation letters coming in from my teachers.

My GPA is shown below -

Acad. GPA (9-12) 3.5 UW, 3.65 W
Total GPA (9-12) 3.58 UW, 3.75 W
Acad. GPA (10-12) 3.65 UW, 3.9 W

ACT: 27

The colleges that I am interested are:

University of Oregon
Seattle University
CU Boulder
NYU
UC Irvine
University of Puget Sound
UC Davis
UC Santa Barbara
Occidental
Emory
Cal Poly
UCLA
UC Berkeley

I know most of these schools are stretches, but I did this on purpose. As long as I can get into 3-4+ schools, I will be happy.

Thank you so much for your time!!

Take this all with a grain of salt, because I am a random person on the internet (granted, a random person who has been swallowed up by this college stuff for the past few months, but still a stranger.)

Berkeley and UCLA are definitely high reaches. Most accepted applicants will have 4+ weighted GPAs and 32+ ACT scores. NYU, Occidental, and Emory are mid-reaches, your GPA is still a bit low for these as is your ACT score. However, you may have a decent chance at these two.

You’ll get tired of hearing this, but your EC’s are standard. Sports, volunteering, something artistic/musical. That’s not saying you shouldn’t be proud of your accomplishments in these or the fact that you did them at all, but nonetheless they are still common and will not set you apart from the pool. If you can bring something unique out in your essay, that will significantly increase your chances.

UC’s don’t take letters of recommendation, so those unfortunately can’t help you there.

I think you have a good shot at Oregon, Seattle, CU Boulder, a pretty good chance at Cal Poly, Irvine, Puget Sound, and a decent shot at Davis and Santa Barbara.

Also, please don’t get discouraged by all the numbers: admission officers read EVERY application all the way through. If you can really get something unique and impressive through in your essay, you could have a chance at very good schools, despite your lower GPA and ACT score.

Good luck on the entire college process!

Thank you!!

University of Oregon- match
Seattle University- match for sure
CU Boulder- match
NYU- mid to high reach
UC Irvine- match
University of Puget Sound- match
UC Davis- mid reach
UC Santa Barbara- high match-low reach
Occidental- match
Emory- high reach
Cal Poly-high match to low reach
UCLA- high reach
UC Berkeley-high reach (Berkeley and UCLA are reaches for most people, however, and UC admissions are very arbitrary nowadays. For the first time ever, UCLA and UC Berkeley had acceptance rates below 20%!)

youve got a shot!
