Hi, I am going to be a senior. Please chance me for UCLA - I hope to major in either Psychobiology or Biochemistry.

GPA: 4.22W/3.89UW/4.16UC

Standardized Testing:
ACT: 33 (going to retake)
APs: Euro (3), Chemistry (4), English Language/Composition (4), Psychology (5), Spanish Language/Culture (5), Biology (planned), Calculus AB (planned), Microeconomics (planned), Statistics (planned)
SAT Subject Tests: Spanish (700), Math II (680), Chemistry (690)

Extracurriculars:

  • Red Cross (9-12) - active member
  • Childcare (9-12) - helped run a family-owned daycare center by performing administrative tasks and helping with daily activities with the children
  • HOSA (10-12) - member in 10th, Treasurer in 11th, Vice President in 12th
  • FMP (11-12) - stands for Freshman Mentorship Program, mentored a group of 25 freshmen (each year, 50 total) and helped with their academic and emotional needs

Volunteering (roughly 500 hours total by the time I apply):

  • Henna4Humanity (9-12): hosting an annual fundraiser to raise money for Middle Eastern/South Asian countries in need of humanitarian relief, total of $4000+ raised over the 4 years
  • Animal Shelter (10-12)
  • MedShare (10-12): sorting and packaging surplus medical supplies (collected from local hospitals) to send to third world countries
  • MCC (11-12): helped with various tasks associated with running/maintaining a Sunday School program at my mosque
  • Tutoring (11-12): helped elementary/middle schoolers with their homework
  • Tutoring (12): going to help the English Language teacher on campus to tutor English-learning high school students in various subjects

Gumby. I’ve been reading your posts for a few months. Please don’t advise these kids regarding their stats. You have absolutely no idea what UCLA admissions will determine regarding the kids’ stats, essays, extracurriculars, etc. Just encourage them to apply. Who are you to make these calls? The numbers from past years are available for everyone to see, and you lack any credibility with respect to potential admissions. If you have a personal experience to discuss, so be it, but please don’t try to come off as an admissions officer.

Your ACT score is competitive, but chemistry scores are a bit of a concern. Can you retake the chemistry SAT and score above 700?
