Chance me back please

@adrinitis Thanks to chancing me! My Stanford application is especially strong, so I’ll be interested to see how that turns out. I’ll chance you later when I’m on my computer

Current acceptances for anyone looking at this thread: Regents UC Irvine, Regents Berkeley, USC Presidential Scholarship

Congrats on Berkeley regents. On the rest of your schools, I think you’ll be a fairly standard, strong journalism/writing applicant; the school paper, well written essays, etc. your gpa and class rank look great, but your act may be a tiny bit on the lower end for places like Yale, Harvard, Princeton, etc. I’d think you’re a solid applicant, though, and I would guess you get into one or two lower Ivies, if not the top ones, and into Some of the non-ivy ivies (i.e. WashU, Hopkins, etc) Good luck, you’ve got a solid chance pretty much anywhere.

@yalehopeful017 Congrats! Which offer do you expect to accept?

I guess I’ll just follow the same format some other people have:

Yale: Defer (as you already posted)
Harvard: Reject
Princeton: Reject
Columbia Waitlist (becasue of your community service otherwise it would be reject)
Duke: Accept
Rice: Accept
Vanderbilt: Accept
Brown: Accept
Dartmouth: Waitlist
Northwestern: Accept
Stanford: Reject
UPenn: Accept
USC: Accept
Berkeley: Accept
UCLA: Accept
UCSD: Accept
UC Irvine: Accept
UCSB: Accept

Your stats are stellar and it’s hard to imagine you not getting in everywhere, especially with your major focused ECs and your passion really shines through your application, but I know a bunch of the ivies can be so random and unpredictable.

Thank you in advance if you do!

I think you have a strong chance at most of these schools. While going through your application I really found some interesting things about you from your activities. Your ACT score and GPA seems to be at least average for most of these schools so I’ll say 50%.

Doesn’t really seem like you have any demonstrated interest for going to an ivy league school, other than the fact that it is an ivy league school. For someone to apply to 7 shows an interest in just brand appeal. You’ll probably get rejected by most because of that. They want students who actually want to be in that school because of reasons other than their athletic conference and acceptance rate. You also shouldn’t be writing like Hemingway. You should be writing like yalehopeful. The colleges are looking to admit you, not Ernie.

Also, if you have 6 leadership ECs (Pres, VP, or captain), you probably have none. They’ll probably question how many you were actually committed to and whether or not these were things you were passionate about or if they were just resume fillers. There isn’t enough time in the day for you to have actual leadership roles in that many clubs and be a valedictorian and an athlete.

I definitely feel for you on the subject tests, and English at a STEM school! Writing nerds, unite! That being said, if you’re going for a writing hook, I think top schools are looking for outside awards, which you haven’t indicated.

Chance me back?

You have amazing stats and ECs I can say that. You seem very confident with your essay and I think most of the schools you apply to will be matches/low matches. Then again, like everyone else said Ivy leagues are very unpredictable and take into consideration that there are many other applicants who most likely have very similar stats/ecs to you and some of the brightest/smartest/you name it still get rejected/waitlisted.

I’m saying that you have a great chance but there must never be a sentence with the terms “ivy-league” and “safety” in the same sentence. So just take that into note

Thanks for chancing me! Best of luck to both of us~

@Lehnsherr Thank you so much for providing me with your perspective! Much appreciated!

@londondad Still waiting on results from other schools! Out of where I’ve already been accepted, I think I would fit in best at USC, but the caliber of their English program isn’t as great when compared to Berkeley’s English program. I’m going to see where else I’m accepted before making a decision!

@vandyhopeful61 Thanks so much for chancing me! I’ll chance you back right now

@prodigyofficial Thank you so much for taking the time to chance me!!!

@CaliCash Thank you for voicing your concerns. I always appreciate input. Personally, as an English major, the Ivies have some of the strongest programs relating to my interests. I’m also fairly open minded and appreciate the different opportunities available at each campus, whether it be Dartmouth’s D-Plan, UPenn’s Kelly Writer’s House, or Yale’s shopping period. Coming from a competitive STEM-centric public high school in California, I’ve always been very excited to have the opportunity to study in a liberal arts environment that lets me “lead a life of literature,” if you will. Most schools in my state (ex. Stanford, UCSD) emphasize science and math, so I decided to apply out of state as well. I have visited every Ivy League school that I decided to apply to and attended all of their presentations at my high school.

The Ivies will not know which schools I applied to; as a result, applying to seven will not hurt me in the admissions process. I made sure to perfect my essays as much as possible before submitting them. As a prospective English major, I take pride in submitting quality work!

I do write like myself  If my style is said to be like Hemingway’s, I view it as a compliment. Being compared to a famous poet never hurt anyone!

I was an athlete for one year, so that doesn’t take up time anymore. Luckily enough, my clubs are all scheduled at different times. The literary magazine meets once every two weeks on Mondays, the other Mondays are for Ambassadors. Tuesday is for Debate, Wednesday is for Writing Center, once every two weeks I have Statistics Club on Thursday, and the Environmental Organization meets after school. All of my friends are involved in these activities, so I’m involving myself in activities that interest me while interacting socially at the same time. I wanted to take advantage of all opportunities that my high school offers so I wouldn’t have any regrets leaving high school, and I don’t.

Maybe I am more busy compared to most students. However, I assure you, being involved and committed to all of these activities is extremely rewarding. I was elected into every position I have, and my teachers, as well as my counselor, can verify that I am active in each and every one of them. I have wanted to leave an impact on my school and my community and I am so, so grateful to be able to say that I have.

@writergirl0316 I do have a few outside awards (ex. a national poetry award and multiple works that have been published on a national scale); however, I haven’t been exposed to many opportunities to advance my writing career. The English programs at my school have always been extremely weak in comparison to STEM programs, and I’m guessing that schools may understand the situation that I’m in (I’m literally the only English major in my grade and there are 700 students). I’ll chance you back right now!!!

@risestine Thanks so much for taking the time to chance me!

Good luck - given your interest in English, I think that you will be happier is you go to Uni outside of California.

@londondad I agree! Now I just have to wait for the universities that I applied to outside of California to get back to me! I’ll keep you updated

Yale: I’ll guess a rejetion after the deferral
Harvard: Reject
Princeton: Reject
Columbia Waitlist/reject
Duke: Accept
Rice: Accept
Vanderbilt: Accept
Brown: Accept
Dartmouth: Accept
Northwestern: Accept
Stanford: Reject
UPenn: Accept
USC: Accept
Berkeley: Accept
UCLA: Accept
UCSD: Accept
UC Irvine: Accept
UCSB: Accept

Some of those ivies could flip either way, because they’re super erratic, but I think on the whole you’ve got a really really strong application, and you’ll end up somewhere great. Good luck.
