Chance Me

Hello everyone,

So, I’m curious as to what my chances are. Please keep in mind some details are missing, but I would love to just have a general idea going forward.

I’m currently a junior in the IB program. For my freshman and sophomore years, I was in an arts program at my school for creative writing but switched into IB because of a change in interest. The arts program kept me after school for 2 hours everyday, which lead to a lot of extracurricular performances as you will see below.

I am taking the SAT two times in the coming semester, as well as the ACT. I am aiming for a 1480 for the first time around and a 34. I will take the SAT my senior year if my scores are not good enough (want a 1540). Plan to take two SAT Subject Tests, possibly Chem, French, and/ or English.

My school is public, not super great, but my classes will be marked as highly/most challenging.
Weighted: 4.2
Unweighted: 3.8
Rank: 53/483 (Top 10%)

COLLEGES:

Thinking I will be Pre-Med or an Astronomy Major.

Dartmouth College (NH)
Yale University (CT)
Washington and Lee University (VA)
Wellesley College (MA) double degree with MIT
UNC Chapel Hill (NC)
UMD College Park (MD)

I’m really picky about schools, so I apologize for this kind of random list of schools! Suggest some if you want. B-)

EXTRACURRICULARS:

-Lots of performances as apart of arts program, have all of the playbills for them (9 and 10)
-Self-published two books (9 and 10)
-French NHS (10-12)
-NHS (10-12)
-Founded my school’s Writing Club, VP two years (10-11) P one (12)
-JV Cross Country (11-12) maybe varsity 12
-Volunteer at the library (10-11) 50+ hours
-Founded my school’s running club, where we run a 5k every month with practices everyday (like a sports team), P (11-12)

FUTURE EC:
-Found my school’s chapter of the Science NHS, P
-Start a blog
-Work a part-time job
-Applied for several NASA internships this summer, will most likely be published in a journal if I get one
-Everything I have to do for CAS

Okay, well that’s it!! Thank you to all who respond!

Most of this looks really good however I wouldn’t bother with the blog (since you listed it under future EC) I would just develop your current interests and efforts further like more library volunteer hours because frankly the amount you listed is fewer volunteer hours than some NHS groups require OR if you are /really/ interested in the blog then by all means for for it. In the end, quality is much more important than quantity in terms of extracurriculars. Second of all, your class rank could potentially harm you for the upper tier schools (Ivies). Additionally, none of your extracurriculars demonstrate any interest in science or astronomy (your intended majors) so I would make sure your course rigor in STEM is very good and DEFINITELY take the chem subject test and do well on it (700 minimum). I’m also not sure that they’re care about your self-published books but they might, you never know.

I’d list Darthmouth and Yale as high reaches (as they are for everyone), Washington and Lee as moderate reach, Wellesley and UNC as low matches, and UMD as high matches/low safety. However, admissions officers will know much more about your application and your qualifications and fit to the specific schools so do take this with a grain of salt. I would recommend adding a solid safety school to your list.

As an Ivy applicant, you should know that your rank is not in the top 10%… haha. Your EC’s are decent but pretty average, re: NHS, library volunteer, JV sport (an exception being NHS in a discipline related to intended major.)

Overall, I’d say:

Dartmouth College (NH): Waitlist
Yale University (CT): Reject
Washington and Lee University (VA): Accept
Wellesley College (MA) double degree with MIT: Waitlist
UNC Chapel Hill (NC): Accept
UMD College Park (MD): Accept

Best of luck! Chance me back? http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1966406-chance-me-upenn-ed-yale-brown-princeton-etc-will-chance-back.html#latest
