Chance Me

I already did a chance me thread a few months ago, but since then things have changed and I have more info, so I am doing it again.

I am a white female applying early action for nursing and I am an in-state student. I am a first generation college student and will be applying for financial aid

SAT: 1400 (750 math 650 reading/writing)
3.88 unweighted (Michigan) gpa
Upper level/directed interest classses include:
AP chem
AP bio
Analytical chem (honors chem at my school)
AP macro economics
AP stats
Honors English
Anatomy and physiology
Psychology

I have 2 letter of recommendation one of which is from my ap/honors chem teacher who is also my nhs advisor and it’s really good, and one from my counselor which I haven’t read but is likely pretty good also.

Extracurriculars:
Volunteer at Michigan Medicine
Leadership intern at Camp Invention (stem based science camp)
National honor society
Varsity cheer
Travel softball (8 years)
Vacation bible school leader

Some academic awards I have are:
Academic letter award
Varsity letter award
Principals list
KLAA scholar athlete
Athletic honor roll
Honors in physics/analytical chem/government/world studies

My essays are pretty good I had my English teacher who went to um read them and she said they were good, I wrote about volunteering at umich for one bc for nursing they say experience in the medical field is helpful when applying.

I just want to know what my chances are looking like. I have already reached out to my counselor at umich to show interest and I did 2 visits. I am above average for the nursing school sat (average 1350), but this is my dream school and I’m really hoping to get in!

Since being instate you look good but as you know it’s a competitive field. Many with better stats will be applying. Your overall application looks great. But as you know like everyone gets deferred it seems. Hopefully you won’t be one of them. If your school uses Naviance check it out.

Your experiences looks well rounded and I think you have a good chance as an in-state student. If you took any SAT subject tests and got over 700 consider submitting those as well (especially if you got over 750). And if you apply early, I agree don’t be stressed if you get deferred. It can be a long wait for some and doesn’t necessarily reflect your competitiveness.

Also being a first gen college student will help you some, if not immensely (it might have more impact at private schools but it’s always helpful).

Your stats are good, but Michigan is going to be a reach for just about anyone. As a backup, I think you’re solid for Michigan State also and their nursing program is just as good.

Thanks!! I submitted my application yesterday so hopefully I get in:)

I’m currently at UM as a nursing major! Your stats look great! I hope you get in!

How many students from your HS on average are accepted to UofM each year? If only a handful, mentally factor your rank to assess your chances more closely.
