interested in Lyman Briggs and dentistry

Are you in-state or out of state?

In-state you should be fine. :).

OOS

should I worry about anything. Is this a Match/safety?

It's a match. If you got your ACT up a little bit (30+) it'd be a safety. :).

OOS doesn't hurt me that much? Is it almost a lock that I will get in?
I MSU good to prepare for dentistry?

I don't think OOS hurts that much, although I could be wrong. The GPA is a little on the low side, but the ACT is right on par.

I don't know enough about their dentistry program to be of help but I know that their pre-med program is very good. :( Sorry.

You should be OK, but MSU has been kind of erratic. I know someone who got into U of M, but got wait-listed at MSU, and this was in-state. So you should be in, but there's always a chance that they'll be weird about it.

I agree with MSU being erratic. I heard of someone getting in with just a 3.5 GPA and a 21 ACT. But, I think you'll do okay. I'm not sure how MSU is with accepting OOS students.

Good luck!

You are most likely in. I'd advise you to apply early just in case (i.e. september or october) because the rolling admissions more often and not will swing in your favor

I plan to apply first or second week of sep.

do u guys think I need a letter of recommendation?

nope. if you're applying early, I'd really see no reason. Only by chance if it has been longer than 3 months and you still have not received an accept/reject decision, then chances are you would be postponed and in that case, THEN you should send a recommendation. Otherwise I'd really not bother

Hi!

MSU employs the rolling admissions method, which means that the standards are lower at first and gradually build up with time, and as spots fill up.

The school does really like it when prospective students take AP classes, so that may help compensate for your 3.42 UW GPA, which places you in the 25th percentile of entering freshmen. If you have an upward grade trend, your chances of admission will be even greater. Your ECs are decent for the MSU applicant pool, and your state award in history will no doubt help with admissions.

You are OOS, and state schools, unfortunately, do favor IOS students for some wierd reason, so that may adversely impact your chances of admission.

MSU has been really quirky with admissions lately. I've heard of an IOS kid who's been rejected from State with a 3.7 UW GPA and a 28 ACT. Even worse, for an admissions nightmare, someone from my school (which is a top school in Michigan that matriculated 120 students to State this year and 70 students to Michigan) got rejected from State when he had 5 APs, a 3.8 UW GPA, and a 29 ACT. It would have been a total nightmare for that guy if he had gotten rejected from Michigan, which is alot more consistent with admissions.

**Chances at State: **Match (apply really really early and write good essays, preferably both to show that you're sincerely interested in the school)

MSU is a great school that offers a really good education. Unfortunately, it's not the most prestigious school in the universe, especially after Cedar Fest, and it's often overshadowed by Michigan, located about 100 miles southeast of State. However, the campus at State is awesome, and I have little doubt that you'll enjoy your time there. I recommend campus visiting, if you can, to see if it's a match for you. Dentistry, as well as any other types of medicine, is very strong at Michigan State. It is ranked 9th nationally according to US News Reports. Lyman Briggs is also a very good environment for the Life Sciences. I've heard great things about it.

However, rankings don't tell everything ... Michigan State is so good in medicine that even UMich recognizes it. I've heard of someone who was rejected from UMich Medical School and ended up at MSU Medical School. What happened when he graduated? He's now working at UMich Hospitals. It's pretty ironic.

Unfortunately, I am a die-hard Michigan fan so I'll say GO BLUE right now.

I hope you find this info helpful. I do live in Michigan, so feel free to PM me if you have any more questions. I promise to give you unbiased and accurate info, because I really do like helping people out.
