I am a white male junior from Texas and I am very interested in UT but I'm afraid it is a little out of my league...

GPA- 3.83 WEIGHTED(low rigor; only one or 2 APs per year) currently ranked 149 out of 613(barely top quarter, ouch)

SAT- 2190

EC's- pretty weak: 4 year basketball(2 year letter), 4 year cross country(1 year letter) at a 5A school with 2600+ students, National Merit Qualifier(waiting to see if it is commended scholar or semifinalist, probably just commended) NHS, maybe 60+ hrs community service, worked on and off for 2 years at baskin robbins and refereed youth basketball, aau basketball every summer .... sadly i think thats it

I will not be applying to a specific major because I heard that makes it more selective, correct me if I'm wrong

Considering your SAT scores and GPA, I think you are okay for liberal arts but not being in top 10% might throw you off the ladder if you apply to either the Business or Engineering School.

I was a transfer student (not accepted to Business student and was accepted to Liberal Arts) and my SAT and GPA was a bit lower than yours, which makes me say “okay” for liberal arts.

Also, you can always internally transfer to whichever major you want to get into although I don’t recommend doing that over external transfer if you can do that. There is much more competition in internal transfer, especially considering you are not even top 10 % (nothing to be ashamed, I wasn’t either many of us aren’t ) In my opinion, if you can’t get in, might wanna attend a diff school or go to community college , get a high enough GPA for your desired major , good essays, 1 good recommendation, do some community service during your first year at college, and then apply again and see what happens. Good luck!

GPA does NOT matter for UT, and if you were a transfer student your HS GPA and your SAT score didn’t matter. For transfer admissions, college GPA is pretty much all that matters; for freshman admission, GPA doesn’t matter in the slightest.

The rank is what matters, and it’s pretty low.

Everything else about his application was okay except the top quarter part. If you really want to attend UT, go ahead and get the highest GPA you can earn at a community college and then transfer.

Ya I will apply to the liberal arts college. I wish class rank was not so dang important because the only reason my GPA is so low is because I made 6 B’s in my 3 years of spanish (I am absolutely terrible with that language) so that alone drug my GPA down drastically, I think I only ever made 2 B’s in my life besides that.

Coordinated Admission Program. You basically go to a University of Texas alternate school (San Antonio, Alington, ect.) and transfer in after a year. You need to make a 3.4 GPA to be guaranteed admission but, its definately doable if you got a school like UTSA.

I visit college station often and although I realize that A&M is a good school and an extremely good value in-state, I am not a big fan of the setting or personality.

So I guess I am left with OOS options, any input?

I’d say that with great scores but a lower rank you’d either have to apply to one of the “back door” schools to get into UT (like Geosciences or Nursing) and then perhaps transfer to whatever it is that you want to major in.

Regarding other schools to apply to, it is imperative that you mention what it is that you want to major in.

I think you’ve got a good shot, and if you don’t get in who cares. You’ll most likely wind up at an equally good college. That’s the conclusion I’ve come up with for myself as well ;)
