DD 21 is looking at William & Mary as a reach school for biology or biochemistry, looking toward veterinary school. Here is what might work against her: 1) Female, 2) Asian, 3) Northern Virginia resident.
Now the numbers:
W/GPA: 4.39, ACT: 34
APs: 8 (including senior year)
Dual Enrollment: 2 (including senior year)
Everything else is an honors class, where possible
ECs:
Science Olympiad all four years
Dedicated equestrian
Science Honor Society
Latin Honor Society
Talented artist (painting & drawing)
Some volunteer hours but not many
I’m guessing toss-up, but any insight would be helpful. Thanks in advance.
I would rate her chances better than toss up, likely 60-70% range or better.
Last year, W&M accepted 47% of their instate applicants vs only 31% of their out of state applicants. Their ACT range for the middle 50% of their total accepted freshman class was 30-33.
So, she is an A student whose ACT would put her in the top 25% of a recent incoming freshman class AND she has the big advantage of being an instate student. That makes William & Mary a solid target school for her.
@Bill Marsh: Thanks for your feedback. She took the ACT in December, so we were fortunate to get that in before COVID-19 shut everything down.
Incidentally, a biology major means “just another premed student” to people reading an application. Be sure your daughter makes it clear that she’s aiming for veterinary school (inspired by her equestrian interests, I am guessing?).
Also, if she is interested in doing a double major or minor in another area, include that on the application, always making sure it is a major or minor that W&M offers, of course! (Classical Studies, perhaps, if she loves her Latin?)
Good luck!
Thanks, @prodesse. That’s good feedback.
